The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Still further to packing and domestic arrangements [see JH's 1833-10-26], which seem to be more frenetic and nearing finality.
Last letter to come off the ship with the pilot; next communication will come after landing at the Cape; all are well and comfortable.
Reports on hysterical fit by one of the young servants, and comments on the appropriateness of recommending employment elsewhere for another servant (a request for a recommendation is enclosed). JH alludes to some matter troubling his relationship with MH; Thomas Maclear is about to leave for the Cape.
Painful reflections on the problem troubling the relationship between JH and MH [see JH's 1833-9-25], namely, money, and how it is spent; JH offers some advice with much love.
Packing and domestic arrangements related to Cape voyage preparations.
Mostly about what to pack where; JH concludes with a loving apology for what he said and wrote [see JH's 1833-9-26]; question about re-arranged sitting for JH with H. W. Pickersgill.
Is pressed by work, but will come to London if needed; domestic matters brought up to date.
Invites CW to Slough to demonstrate CW's 'elegant experiments on light & sound.' Will need time to get JH's electric machine in order. Asks for copy of CW's paper on Jew's harp.
H. W. Pickersgill proposed to paint JH's portrait for free, to be given to St. John's College. Now finds JH must pay for picture. Will delay until another artist is chosen.
Shocked to read in paper of HK's loss. Offers condolences.
A friend has requested JH to ask JS whether JS has a large Cauchoix objective lens that he would be willing to sell. JH has dismantled his 20-ft. telescope for voyage to Cape Town.
Assures JS that the person interested in purchasing JS's lens has worthy intentions for it, i.e., its use in a public institution. Regrets that JS distrusted JH's good intentions.
[Extract from a letter of this date to James South:] Tells FA that FA's magnetic experiments have been successfully repeated in England by Peter Barlow, Samuel Christie, Charles Babbage, and JH. Gives details. Publication in process.
Offers a paper ['Note sur la manière d'agir de l'acide nitrique sur le fer,' Annales de chimie, 54 (1833), 87-94] for publication in Annales de chimie. Informs FA how to correspond with JH while JH is at the Cape.
Requests FB to send JH any observations of Gamma Virginis made by FB. Anxious for these because of differences between JH's and Wilhelm Struve's measurements of Gamma Virginis. Provides JH's new determination of the orbital elements of this object. Thanks FB for publications FB sent. JH's brother-in-law, J[ames Calder] Stewart, may visit FB.
Must rearrange date of sitting for HP's preparation of a portrait of JH.
Hopes JE will write to JH at Cape. Responds to JE's comments on JH's method of dealing with double stars. Thanks for generous comments on JH's Prelim. Discourse.
Wishes to nominate Mr. Hardin [?], who has written on Indian geology, for membership in the Geological Society.
Arranges to meet TH, probably at Slough, and also to get a barometer from TH.
