The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Is working on humans and their proportions. Encloses brochures. Wishes to dedicate L'Anthropométric to JH.
Thanks JH for accepting dedication. This has brought AQ utmost pleasure. Has dedicated few works. Expresses his esteem for JH's character and talent.
Even though JH has not written, AQ has received news from JH's compatriots. Asks about JH's health. Has not really used equatorial. Continues work on terrestrial magnetism and includes observations. Asks if JH has received last part of translation of JH's work on optics.
Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts acknowledges receipt of JH's 'On the Chemical Action of the Rays of the Solar Spectrum.'
[Form letter] Royal Academy of Science and Humanities acknowledges receipt of JH's Cape Results.
Thanks JH for a copy of JH's Cape Results. Is pleased by JH's encouragement of AQ's meteorological observations, about which AQ comments further. Speaks of a family of comets related to Mars and Jupiter and asks JH's opinion about this.
