The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Suggests 'amphitype' as name for JH's process whereby same picture can go from negative to positive. Further comments on comet sighting, and on some improvements to Daguerreotype.
Comments on JH's positive calotype. Suggests comet may be return of (J.-D.) Cassini's comet of 1668. Gives theorem for finding parabolic orbit of comet if two observations are made in the ecliptic.
Announces election of Marquis of Breadalbane [John Campbell] as lord rector of Marischal College for coming year. Thanks for JH's advice to college senate.
WD's 1843 measurements for Gamma Virginis. Used crystal micrometer for all observations, to compare with parallel wire micrometer used in past.
Suggests modifying square base of JH's telescope to round base. Estimates cost at £80 to £100.
Refuses to risk GD's funds by giving cost estimate for unusual telescope, especially if R.S.L. expects GD to pay for any expenses over estimate. Regretfully stops manufacture of telescope.
The committee report on simultaneous magnetical and meteorological observations will be read at the B.A.A.S. meeting in Cork on 17 Aug.
Extract from observations of 70 Ophiuchi by F. W. Bessel. Results agree with WS's measurements by different method and increase WS's confidence. Hopes for more information on Gamma Virginis before finalizing WS's manuscript.
