The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Regrets that JH's health does not allow him to visit his 'dear suffering friend' [Richard Jones], who JH hopes may yet rally.
[John Russell] Hind is being considered for the post of astronomer at Trivandrum in India.
Asks for William Lassell's address in Malta, as JH's son, William, may be able to stop in to visit Lassell.
JH's exertions and friendship are a treasure. Will visit them on Monday next.
Thanks for RJ's 'unwearied vigour and activity of mind.'
Has begged Edward Ryan to see JH and have a consultation about some of RJ's affairs, which he would like to settle. Pleased to hear that Willy [Herschel] is doing so well.
Wished Edward Ryan to consult JH regarding [G. H. Gordon (4th Earl of Aberdeen)]. as he knows him better. Will not make any move until he has consulted Sir James Graham. Unable to manage Monday, but any day after will suit him. Mrs. Jones is very depressed and needs a change of air.
Replies to several queries about papers of JH. JH describes the accidental production of some interesting copper salt crystals.
Thanks GS for his paper on fluorescent spectra; JH is interested in having these rays used on quartz, hoping to find his 'thermic' rays acting.
Writes to acknowledge receipt of a testimonial on behalf of [George] Wilson.
Sending diagrams of Halley's Comet traced from a work, The Orbs of Heaven.
Comments on color as a sensation, and on GS's thoughts on 'lavender rays.'
Thanks JJ for the counterfeit coin he sent; JH comments on the possibility of oval coinage.
Advises GS against spending £800 to verify the available drawings of Saturn; instead JH suggests alternative methods.
Asks GS about ordering instruments from [George] Wilson.
His letter and accompanying packet arrived for which accept his best thanks for the valuable contribution to the literature of physical geography. Is gratified by JH's commendation of his own Physical Atlas.
Has just received the first part of Johnston's General Atlas for which accept his very best thanks. It is a beautiful work. Has been working at cartography himself and produced a projection of 97-100ths of the whole surface of the globe in one chart. Comments on this.
Inquiring about the cost of instruments being shipped.
Acknowledges receipt of a paper by [William] Pole, which JH will review.
