The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Cannot find any record of his having written. Is sending an official request from the Admiralty for JH to superintend the dome of the Cape telescope. Advice regarding his overpayment of money to the Astronomer Royal.
Encloses the manuscript of the directions for atmospheric waves and barometric fluctuations. Suggests that it would be useful if the vessel about to travel to New Zealand would be utilized to supply barometric readings en route.
Omitted a detail concerning observations in his last letter. Further regarding the proposed observations in New Zealand.

The memoir of JH's aunt is forthcoming. Comments on old and new style in calendars.
Some comments about dates related to JH's aunt Caroline Herschel.

Returns letter from French ambassador, Count Jarnac. Deeply honored by French king's desire to bestow 'Cross of the Legion of Honour' on JH, but rules of British government do not permit him to accept it.
Thanks for New Year's wishes. Honored by French king's award, but asks AP not to press this matter. British government will not permit JH to accept it, and JH does not want to draw attention to himself while trying to arrange memorial to Thomas Maclear.
