M. McCann sent his paper to JH for communication to the R.S.L., which he did, but does not know the outcome of it. Was unable to report on it as his own knowledge was not modern enough.

Asks for latest chemical information on platina groups, or 'Platinoids.' In trying to remove platina from mineral specimens JH may have found new metal. Describes its characteristics. P.S.: Keep this information private.
Thanks for information [on latest platina research]. Has encountered 'a totally new metallic chemistry.' Searching for papers by Mr. Gros and Mr. Beiset. Describes JH's experiments with 'Platinoids,' which JH named like asteroids: Heberum, Astraeum, and Neptunium.
Encloses JH's letter of 11 Oct., which was not mailed to RK. Discovered traces of titanium in Astraeum. Puzzled by saline compounds that appear in JH's experiments with 'Platinoids.'
Thanks for his letter regarding M. McCann. Does he know anything of the capabilities of Parkinson Wilson, Mr. Hobson, and Mr. Sandiman? Had intended to communicate his own researches on platina a long time ago, but was hoping to conclude them first. Thomas Graham will send down the form of certificate for him to sign.
Would like JH's opinion on a memoir by M. McCann on the reflection of light from binaxal crystals. McCann is a candidate for a mathematical chair in Queen's College [Cork].
Some of his friends are wishing to put his name forward as a candidate for the fellowship of the R.S.L. Would JH sign his certificate?
Only received JH's letter yesterday as he does not visit Cork very often. Is not surprised at JH's findings on platinum. Gives some of the more important memoirs on platinum. Is pleased that JH is interested in chemical research into platinum.
Is about to leave for a journey through Belgium and Germany for the purpose of studying collegiate education on behalf of the Irish government. Would welcome any letters of introduction from JH.
