Is pleased H. J. Temple (3rd Viscount Palmerston) has replied so promptly to JH's memorial regarding Thomas Maclear. Would like JH's sanction for JL's support of George Rümker as the new Observer at Hamburg.

Informs JW that JH has received notice from H. J. Temple [Lord Palmerston] that Thomas Maclear is to be put on the next list to receive a pension.

Sending a paper he has written on his ozone experiments; please communicate it to the R.S.L. if JH thinks it worthy. Would JH request the R.S.L. to re-suspend EL's certificate as he seems certain of some support from Council. Will soon complete his work on ferns.

Remains unconvinced by RF's ideas on gravitating lunisolar action on the atmosphere.

Is grateful for the trouble JH has taken in annotating the proofs. Will send him a copy of the book when printed. Thanks also for the atomic dialogue.

Grateful for the efforts of JH and his fellow astronomers in England for the continuation of TM's pension. Busy unpacking valuable library of Sir George Grey presented to the Cape. Details of his recent observations of stars. Weather has been bad. Surface of the object glass of transit circle is badly corroded. Sailor son is well again.

Glad to hear of the recovery of JH's daughters. Encloses a copy of a letter of thanks written to H. J. Temple (3rd Viscount Palmerston). Error in the sun's distance is peculiar. Has been elected corresponding member of the French Academy. Family has been attacked by the influenza.

Is pleased that the Government have put Sir Thomas Maclear on the Civil list. Has read JH's paper on atoms with much interest and amusement. Hopes that JH will call at the Observatory when in Oxford. Finds the R. C. Carrington transit circle a valuable instrument. Comments on his observations.

Attended the lectures given by JH's son at the [Royal Institution] and Michael Faraday and Bence Jones think he should not be considered for the post at the Geographical as he is cut for more scientific things. Would like JH's views.
