Charles Langton has been given a living near Ludlow.
During the past two months CD has been lucky with fossil bones, and he is also finding new specimens of living animals.
He describes an ostrich hunt.
Has received several letters from home.
He enjoys Buenos Aires and admires the señoritas. Tierra del Fuego is next.
A French collector [Alcide d’Orbigny] has been at the Rio Negro and will probably have "taken the cream". CD’s luck with fossil bones, among them a large extinct armadillo-like animal. Describes some birds, toads, Crustacea, and other marine specimens. Nearly all plants flowering at Bahia Blanca were collected. Is sending two large casks of fossil bones by packet.
Sent JH's last letter to Sir James Graham to show him JH's feelings in the matter of transport to the Cape. Sir James replied to the effect that he would be very pleased to arrange a passage for JH. Hall feels in an awkward situation and thinks that JH should visit the Admiralty and have conversation with Sir James.
Is grateful for BH's interest over the matter of travel to the Cape. Gives his own views on the intentions of Sir James Graham. Intends to see Graham personally and thank him for his interest.
Is gratified that JH has consented to sit for his portrait. Let him know the artist he has selected and they can arrange sittings.
Sending check in payment of JH's article on Celestial Mechanism in the Quarterly Review. Would be pleased if JH would now write an article on comets.
Still worrying about planetary perturbations of Jupiter and Saturn [see GP's 1829-10-11]. Seeks advice on the matter from JH, and asks JH to make any necessary corrections on papers GP has sent.
Declines invitation to serve on next R.S.L. Council, being busy with preparations for Cape trip.
Thanking him for sending the Memoirs.
Is sending, for communication to the R.A.S., observations on Biela's comet and a speculation on comets.
Hopes to have JH's catalogue for the first meeting of the R.A.S. Anything about the comet would be welcome. Regarding one of Franciscus Vièta's mathematical theories.
Has received the catalogue and it will be sent to the press. Is grateful for JH's offers. Does he know anything of Bullialdi's (Ismael Boulliau) Astronomica philolaica? Refers to Franciscus Vièta's Harmonicum coeleste. 25 copies of JH's latest paper has been forwarded.
Has visited Caroline Herschel, who is well. Discusses whether JH will make magnetic observations at the Cape of Good Hope.
Is sending JH some writings by Mr. (Mrs.?) Thomas Malthus on idiotic people and a book by WW [Astronomy and General Physics]. Mentions Richard Jones. Asks whether WW has seen 'the comet.'
Has postponed answering his letter until he has some worthwhile results to transmit. Local savants are unwilling to take much trouble but has met a German meteorologist, L. F. Kämtz, and together they have carried out observations on some of the mountains. Encloses some of the actinometer readings. Has 80 series of magnetic observations.
