The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Is obliged for JH's readiness to assist in the preparation of the Admiralty Manual. Will put matter in hand at once.
Has now sent the letters and circulars to the various people in connection with the Admiralty Manual. Has not sent one to W. R. Birt, but will do so if JH thinks it advisable.
Is sorry to hear that they are not to have the services of Adam Sedgwick. Would be pleased if JH would write to C. R. Darwin. Thinks that 200 pages will be quite long enough for the Admiralty Manual.
Sends the pamphlet by W. Snow Harris on lightning conductors. May find some extracts useful for the Admiralty Manual. Also extracts from William Reid and Mr. Liddington's work on hurricanes.
Suggesting a title for the Admiralty Manual. Thinks it early to commence printing as papers may be delayed. Wording on the circular may do for the preface.
Is prepared to enlarge the Admiralty Manual provided the extra material is of good quality and not too bulky. Will contact John Murray [Jr.] about printing and publishing rights. Will give W. R. Birt every facility for a separate publication.
Sending a publication similar to the one which JH is editing. Hardly seems worthy of the names of G. C. L. D. Cuvier and A. L. Jussieu.
Is obliged for his note. Does not object to the increased size of the Admiralty Manual, but should keep it within reasonable limits.
Would like to hear how the Admiralty Manual is progressing.
Thanks for letter. Is grateful for all the trouble JH is taking over the Admiralty Manual. Presumes JH has dealt with rotatory storms; otherwise he would have asked Col. William Reid to write a few pages.
