The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Returns reports on Cape Observatory and reform of star nomenclature. FB was not included in committee to report reduction of stars in N. L. Lacaille's Coelum australe stelliferum, but sends FB's own report on it, which JH may send in.
Has been obtaining information for his report on the observatories. Is JH's paper ready to be printed? Will be able to economize on the printing of the Greenwich Observations.
Notifying him of a forthcoming meeting of the Council of the R.A.S. Report is ready.
Vacant rooms at Somerset House and possibility of the R.A.S. being allocated some. Suggests a meeting with Frederick Augustus (Duke of Sussex) to press their cause.
Further remarks on the possibility of rooms for R.A.S. at Somerset House. Will be pleased to see him at the visitation. Is working on a paper on the proper motion of the stars.
Has met Frederick Augustus (Duke of Sussex), who would be pleased to receive a deputation. The Council of the R.A.S. have appointed a deputation, including JH. F. W. Bessel's innovation with observations.
John Brinkley (Bishop of Cloyne) is in town and is to dine with him next week. Hopes JH can join him.
Regrets that JH could not dine with him and John Brinkley (Bishop of Cloyne). Has had a letter from the Admiralty about a grant to [T. J.?] Hussey.
Thanks for the paper on Ophiuchi. On the value of JH's works. Printing of [Stephen] Groombridge's catalogue. Candidates for medals awarded by the R.A.S.
Is sending a copy of N. L. Lacaille's catalogue of principal stars. New observer in Yorkshire, a Mr. Beaumont. Pendulum theories known in France, and printed, but not apparently generally known. Is working on new paper for the R.S.L. on various kinds of pendulums.
Passing on the offer of assistance by Frederick Augustus (Duke of Sussex) for JH's projected visit to the Cape of Good Hope.
Giving the dates of the visitation day. Also the date of the next meeting of the R.A.S. Has been experimenting with pendulums.
Has forwarded the parcel as requested. Is unable to send O. F. Mossotti's parcel as he does not know his address. Wilhelm Olbers' letter is being translated. Attended a committee meeting of the R.S.L. on a new telescope. Printing of the Memoirs has been delayed.
Must see him on an important matter.
Is at present in town. Sorry he was out when JH called. What shall he do with JH's barometer? Thanks for the telescopic tests.
Hopes he is safely landed. The government have agreed to give financial assistance to set up an observatory at Edinburgh. Financial difficulties at the R.S.L. Dispute between James South and Edward Troughton. Admiralty has referred the question of the printing of [Stephen] Groombridge's catalogue to FB and G. B. Airy. Has received the Royal Medals on behalf of JH. JH has also been awarded the Lalande medal.
R.A.S. has been allocated rooms at Somerset House. The James South affair has been submitted to referees. Has discovered a large collection of John Flamsteed's papers at the Greenwich Observatory.
Regarding meteorology. John Pond has resigned as Astronomer Royal and G. B. Airy been appointed in his place. Has finished his own account of John Flamsteed and sent it to the press. Is drawing up a report for the new standard scale.
Has sent copies of various star catalogues. Regarding the Brisbane Catalogue and its accuracy. R.A.S. has awarded JH its medal. J. J. Littrow and the appearance of the comet.
