Has been given every facility to erect his telescope in Malta. Atmosphere has been excellent for observations. Has studied the satellites of Uranus and the ring of Saturn; the latter is puzzling. Has been astonished with the views of Orion.
Lady Lubbock has received a letter from a friend of JH's and it seems desirable that JH should know the contents. Can only communicate it verbally. Sends their congratulations on the forthcoming marriage of Miss Caroline Herschel.
The Australian ship carrying the gold for England has visited the Cape. Many of the Cape people have moved to Australia. Comments on the gold.
Will be pleased to officiate at wedding of JH's daughter Caroline [see JH's 1852-10-30].
Has arrived in London, ready for the wedding on following day [see GP's 1852-12-4].
Surprised by visit of Treasury people to attend examination of diets from Sheffield and Bringham. Waiting for authority to continue issuing coins previous to pyx assay.
Sends messenger to JH with checks for wages and enclosed correspondence.
Sends assay book as JH requested. Cannot find HH's notes on silver coinage; will continue to search.
Returned Mr. Shaw's bond to Mr. Regland and asked Regland to clarify relationship between two Mr. Westwoods. Sends papers for JH's signature. Reports have returned on 50 gold ingots. Compares errors among assays by W. H. Field, Thomas Graham, and W. A. Miller.
Gold assay reports by Thomas Graham contain too many errors. Distrusts all previous assays performed at Graham's laboratory.
Inland Revenue office does not understand that punches and dies for coins may be produced outside Mint. Anthony de Rothschild claims to have lost large sum due to improper assay [of gold], but still wants to sell £10,000 more to Mint. Mint can comply with only first part of order from House of Commons; second part requires information kept secret by Bank of England.
According to H. R. Reynolds, Mr. Westwood Sr., though a bondsman to the Crown, may still serve as surety for Mr. Westwood Jr. Should HH notify Mr. Regland that JH accepts two recommended sureties?
Letters to Inland Revenue office regarding [Leonard] Wyon's work are ready for JH to sign. Accuracy of coins.
Forwards letter containing extraordinary proceedings relative to copper coinage for Ireland. Will send check for weekly wages to JH for signature.
Gave Mr. Baxter's letter to H. W. Field, so Field may return relics. Forwards letter from J. W. Morrison to JH. Advises JH not to recommend machinery for Sydney branch mint unless Treasury asks JH to do so. Congratulations on wedding of JH's daughter Caroline.
C. E. Trevelyan wants JH to meet with governor of Bank of England. Congratulations on success of JH's son.
