In return sends Smith Correspondent Member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Turin diploma, procured on 4 June 1789, and hopes in time to propose him as an Associate Foreign Member, if Smith would fulfill the criteria by sending further papers to be read. Offers to send memoirs of the society and asks for seeds of 'Smithia'. Asks whether Smith would like to be an Associate Foreign Member of the Royal Agricultural Society of Turin. On behalf of Smith shall liase with the booksellers Reycends on the sale of Smith's works. Asks for his respects to be given to Sir Joseph Banks.

Sending Smith eight volumes of the Royal Agricultural Society of Turin via Dr Istria, who is travelling to London with the Marquess of Moss, asks that Smith introduces Istria to the medical establishment. Also sending a dissertation on the propagation of mushrooms, work by Mr Pic and a pamphlet by Mr Bonansea on a new theory on the internal cause of the putrid fever. Has had to postpone sending dried plant specimens. Hopes in future to send the five volumes of the old Royal Academy of Sciences of Turin and the three volumes of the new Royal Academy of Sciences. Thanks Smith for the paper he sent on the "propagation of species" and seeds of 'Smithia' and welcomes his paper on ferns and on any other subject of natural history.

Smith elected Associate Foreign Member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Turin in preference to [Peter Simon] Pallas and others by a majority of seventeen to two. Dr Istria was unable to bring to London the promised six volumes of memoirs of the Royal Agricultural Society of Turin.

The paper [unidentified] Smith sent to the Turin Academy arrived too late to be included in the already completed volume of memoirs but in gratitude to Smith the Academy has ordered that the paper be printed immediately. [Carlo] Allioni and [Carlo Antonio Ludovico] Bellardi send their respects.

Sending books to Smith on the ship "Buxton", captained by Clement Wertz, including 30 copies of Smith's [unspecified] paper on ferns and six copies of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Turin's fifth volume, one for Smith and the others to be distributed to Mr Priestly, Mr Herschel, the Astronomical Society of London, the Society of Philadelphia, and the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Boston. Has not sent the six volumes of memoirs of the Royal Agricultural Society of Turin because of the risk of the sea voyage in the present time of war.
