The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Suggests how HB should request government compensation for HB's son for former services as probationer assayer and for loss of future employment.
Will forward HB's letter to Treasury but with note that JH did not regard HB's son as actual probationer assayer. Denies HB's claim to deserve new accommodations after HB vacates quarters at Mint.
Awards made by master [of Mint] to Moneyers should not interfere with Moneyers settling accounts among themselves.
WB is accepted as new assistant Coiner of Mint. Official appointment will follow.
After their contract expires on 13 May, Moneyers will continue their operations at Mint until importation of bullion ceases, at which time WB's duties as assistant Coiner will commence. Living accommodations are not yet available at Mint.
Encloses copy of JH's letter to C. E. Trevelyan announcing decisions by EE and Robert Rintoul to decline offices of Chief Coiner and Assistant Coiner, respectively.

RJ's letter to William Whewell helped JH understand why public panic creates pressure for more money. Asks for RJ's opinion about concurrent circulation of gold and silver. Gives example of this 'compound tender' or 'binary standard' that haunts JH.
Gratefully returns [Michel] Chevalier's work, which contained numerical data that JH sought.
Received GM's letter of 20 Mar., stating GM's position for official record. Regrets that GM interpreted conversations with JH and H. D. Harness in manner that led to so many misunderstandings. Asks for early reply from GM regarding office of Melter.
Announces that Robert Mushet accepted office of Melter, which GM declined. When does GM want to terminate contract as Melter and Refiner? Draw up GM's claims for compensation and JH will forward these to Treasury.
[P.S. to letter of 28 Sept. 1851:] JH wrote to J. W. Morrison about GM's claim to melting pots in refinery. Asks GM to clarify Mint records regarding pots. [JH note: Excerpts from Mint records, 1820-1844, outlining history of stopped pots in Mint refinery.]

Received BP's letter of 'the 9th.' Concerned that BP's words were colored by strong emotion.
Wants BP's opinion on the number of casts that should be made for medal.
