The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Tells about missing a meeting with HRH Prince Albert, about a paper read at a R.S.L. meeting, and describes how to figure out how strong a reading glass JH needs to buy for his wife, Margaret. JH saw Charles Wheatstone, who has devised an alphabetic telegraph.
Mostly news of what JH has been doing the last day or so, including a visit to daughter Caroline, whose daughter is better, and about JH's accommodations and food, together with comments about [William Henry] Fitton.
Is writing to MH about Charles Pritchard's letter about work for son Alexander [see CP's 1859-11-27]; JH is now asking MH for her thoughts on the matter and adds other possibilities for Alexander. Comments on the superior meat available in London, and on his health.
Asks WW to check JH's draft report for the Meteorological and Magnetic Committee. Illness will keep him from attending the B.A.A.S. meeting.
Thanks for sending the note of A. J. Ellis. Comments on this and his own apparent mistake. Pleased to hear that the invalid is progressing. Their potato crop has an attack of the blight.
About the cost of sending a telegram to India.
Testimony to the value of HF's work when JH was Master of the Mint.
