Received Hobhouse's letter of 27 May with reply from H.E.I.C. board of directors regarding establishment of magnetic observatories in India. D. F. J. Arago recommends additional station on Socotra Island [in Gulf of Aden].
Departure of J. C. Ross for Antarctic expedition is approaching. Hopes that Admiralty will soon authorize R.S.L. to assist Ross in preparing instruments and coordinating global observations.
Reticent to accept fellowship of London University if obligations of time and attention are too great. Requests more time to consider responsibilities of the post.
