The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

In reply to FB [see FB's 1831-8-25], JH believes that [Henry] Taylor, the person who had done all the reductions of the observations [Stephen] Groombridge's catalogue, should be asked to write the preface, both by reason of his familiarity with the material, as well as having earned the right to do so.
Grieved to hear of Fearon Fallows broken state of health; in response to FB's request, JH reviews a number of possible candidates to succeed Fallows.
Expresses JH's preferences with respect to the appointment of the Cape Observatory astronomer in terms of the choices available [Follow-up letter to JH's 1831-9-13].
Supports the remeasurement of N. L. Lacaille's geodetic arc in South Africa, giving a number of reasons for his support.
Suggestions and diagrams for projecting sound great distances by means of small arms and parabolic reflectors.
Requests reimbursement for £316 JH paid to [Georg] Merz for two bills owed by astronomer royal.
Reimbursement from Navy for bills paid by JH to Georg Merz for 'Cape Equatorial.'
'Enclosed' will answer JH's question. Will deliver dome [for Cape of Good Hope telescope] to Deptford Dock Yard.
Concerned that JH has not received 'Cape papers' sent with FB's letter. Estimates not yet called for. FB will see that Cape [necessities?] are not forgotten. When will JH present R.S.L. recommendation of 'the Expedition'? That would be good opportunity to 'fire another shot' at Lord Minto [Gilbert Elliot] or Mr. Wood.
FB pleased by JH's note yesterday announcing JH's resignation [as secretary of] R.S.L. Hopes JH will accept 'another office' in R.S.L. at future date.
Forwarded JH's letter to Lord Minto [Gilbert Elliot]. John Russell sent Antarctic resolution of B.A.A.S. to Minto at Admiralty six weeks ago. Glad that JH finds Lord Melbourne [William Lamb] favorable to this enterprise.
Completion and transfer of telescope for Cape [of Good Hope]. Grateful for receipt of [Cape Results].
[Received JH's 12 Nov. letter.] Send bill for Munich telescope to Admiralty. Order parts for dome construction, which [Thomas] Maclear cannot procure at Cape [of Good Hope].
[Reply to JH's 19 Nov. note.] FB may be able to get Admiralty to have roof [for telescope at Cape of Good Hope] built at Cranbrook under JH's direction. Submit plan or estimate of time and expenses. Just saw [Thomas] Maclear's letter telling of adventures in 'northern expedition.'
Thanks for JH's reply about 'Towson Tables.' Please return copy of JH's letter to FB. Encloses Georg Merz's account. [Telescope] is at Custom House awaiting shipment to Cape of Good Hope. Does JH have plan and estimate yet for dome, so FB can present it to Admiralty? Received JH's 24 Oct. note about Mr. Morris's account.
Admiralty lords paid £316 to JH's account at Drummond's [Bank] for dome to house Cape of Good Hope telescope.
JH must write official letter to Admiralty stating completion of [Cape of Good Hope] telescope and explaining reason for additional £170.
Received yesterday JH's receipts for payment of Cape telescope. Forwarded these to accountant general of Navy.
Encloses note from accountant general of Navy about payment of Cape telescope. Send receipt to FB to complete transaction.
