The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Has not heard from America. Discusses paper on electric conduction. Wishes to move further south. Thanks JH for securing WR's election to R.S.L.
[Edward] Sabine's letter confirmed WR's membership in R.S.L. Feel he was ill-used by Dollar Institution. Apologizes for trouble he caused JH.
Introduces [Dionysius] Lardner, who is a mathematician. Asks how [John] Brinkley's collimators succeeded.
Sends copy of his account of the achromatic telescope because JH did not receive the original. Constructing an achromatic telescope of 5-foot focal length.
Recently received telescope from the optician. Some adjustments are necessary. [Robert] Blair has a similar idea regarding telescopes. Asks JH to mention his idea to the Astronomical Society.
Gives permission to release his telescope proposal to others. Discusses the progress of the telescope. Considers modifying the arrangement of lenses.
Asks JH to report how James South's telescope performs. There was a defect in the settings of the telescope. Hopes JH's method of eliminating chromatic aberration improves the microscope.
Has received a letter from the Astronomical Society secretary. Worries AR may have offended JH and requests guidance. Describes performance of his telescope.
Introduces botanist [Nathaniel] Wallich in letter. Any kindness shown him will be appreciated. Discusses some matters of geology.
Discovered a mistake in Mr. Perkins's paper published in the Annals of Philosophy. Perkins has not yet corrected the error, although he was requested to do so.
Sends WS JH's 'Light' published in the Encyclopaedia Metropolitana. Mentions recalibration of his magnitude measurements of small stars near other small ones. Comments on results in WS's paper concerning Saturn's ring. Confirms sighting of 'well defined, equable, planetary disk.'
Accepts JH's extension of Class I double stars. Comments on comparison of these and suggests comparison of respective scales might be mutually useful. Includes continuation of work on micrometer measurements of Saturn. Notices strange eccentricity of Saturn's rings. Is considering comparing his degree-measurements with Finland and Lapland.
Lists contents of a letter sent on 1828-7-6. JH's Light and third catalogue of double stars sent. Details of nebulae included.
Translation of JH's article Light begun. Publisher is in Paris. Gives name of collaborator as [P. F.] Verhulst. Has heard of others translating JH's work. As director of Brussels observatory, AQ needs best works of astronomy. Would JH help?
Acknowledges receipt of papers sent by WH for Astronomical Society and R.S.L. and will deliver them, but currently has not time to say more. Looks forward to enrollment of WH's name among members at next Astronomical Society meeting.
Requests permission to translate JH's work on light into German.
Has found JG's paper [on logarithms] and will give it to the R.S.L. President and Council.
Thanks for remainder of WH's essay on 'Systems of Rays.' Recalls error-ridden copy of JH's Light given to WH; sends correction. Wishes to propose WH for membership in Astronomical Society.
Thanks JH for award and dinner invitation given to him by Astronomical Society.
Acknowledges receipt of CH's diary. JH apologizes for mishandling one aspect of the awarding of the Astronomical Society's Gold Medal to CH.
