The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Concern for Margaret Brodie Herschel's illness. Income from family holdings. Regards to James Grahame and his father.
Bring Isabella Stewart to Slough on Wedesday.
Visit to Slough by Mrs. and Miss Stewart. Mr. Secker obtained part payment of Mr. Davenport's overdue rent.
Comforted by JH's and Margaret's good health. Plans to visit Margate. [James] Grahame will visit Slough soon. Mrs. and Miss Stewart are enjoying Slough.
If Margaret Brodie Herschel is too ill, do not travel to London for MPH's sake. Will send Mrs. Moorsom to Slough.
Concerned that JH is having trouble dealing with Mr. Davenport. [Stewart family's servant] Mrs. Tucker visited MH overnight. Mrs. Moorsom will come to Slough. Visit by [James] Grahame last evening.
JH arrived safely yesterday and attended event at home of Sir Joseph Banks. Dr. [Matthew] Baillie asked about Lady Mary Herschel. JH and Charles Babbage, preparing to tour France, leave tomorrow for Dover. Wishes better health for MH and William Herschel.
Plans to arrive tomorrow for visit.
Explains how CB responded to JH's request that CB be a trustee for marriage settlement, prior to JH's marriage to Miss Gwatkin. Will meet the Gwatkins at Friday's party. Hopes to find time to speak to JH about this in private. Declines to pursue the course requested by William and Mary Pitt Herschel until JH confides more in CB.
Writes to parents to say that JH is well, his head has healed, and he is looking forward to his holidays.
Hopes that JH's mother has had a pleasurable time in London; JH's class went to see Mrs. Mason's (?) baby.
A thank you note for clothes, written at school [Mr. Bull's], and requesting that JH's cyphering and music books be sent.
Assures JH that exchange of letters with William Herschel did not produce alienation. Encourages both to meet for discussion. JH's cousin [Mary Baldwin] anxiously awaits reply from JH.
