The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Captain F. W. Beechey is in town and will remain until Wednesday evening. He received the enclosed this morning.
Has sent to India House to find out if William Mann has been appointed to Madras. Thomas Maclear's views on a new assistant. Unable to get a copy of Mr. Collet's Trigonometrical tables.

Is sending on the proofs as he does not know the printer.

Report for the Lords of the Admiralty on the desirability of supplying Thomas Maclear with a transit circle.

Is pleased to inform him that the Admiralty has ordered a transit circle for the Cape.
Encloses a letter from Thomas Maclear regarding the resignation of his assistant, George Childe. Would like JH's opinion on the appointment of Maclear's sons to succeed Childe.
Thinks that a note must have miscarried as he is sure he informed him that the Admiralty had appointed Thomas Maclear's son [George Maclear] an assistant at the Cape and his other son [John Maclear] to a ship.
Apologizing for the delay. Sends various map locations. Also extract from Captain F. W. Beechy's letter regarding magnetic operations.
Inquires about appropriate person to add to the Cape Observatory staff, if FB can persuade the Admiralty of the need. Thanks JH for his comments on chloride of silver; were much better than W. H. F. Talbot's.
