C. E. Trevelyan reports that W. E. Gladstone agreed to 'subject of our conversation yesterday.' Does [?] still want to meet with JH at Treasury chambers today?
The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
C. E. Trevelyan reports that W. E. Gladstone agreed to 'subject of our conversation yesterday.' Does [?] still want to meet with JH at Treasury chambers today?
Cease coining florins and commence production of shillings and sixpence. [JH annotation: Saw Brande today and gave these instructions verbally.]
Encloses letter, with JH's approval, from E. W. Ward at Sydney branch mint requesting authority to appoint W. S. Jevons and F. B. Miller as assayers, H. A. Severn and John MacCutcheon as clerks, two foremen of mechanics, and one engineer in Coining department.
Forwards to Treasury commissioners JH's correspondence with managers and directors of Bank of Ireland and Provincial Bank of Ireland regarding introduction of new copper coin. Requests authorization to proceed with distribution.
Regarding future improvements at Mint that would involve Board of Works, JH prefers to postpone major renovations that JH suggested in Dec. 1852. Notes two minor repairs needed in Melting Room.
[Form letter] Announces next meeting of Literary and Philosophical Society, with presentation by [Peter] Spence on atmospheric electricity.
Send 68 boxes of copper coins next week to Bank of Ireland and to Provincial Bank of Ireland.
Instead of index of all printed papers relating to Mint requested by JH, GB suggests set of indexes from 1800 to 1852 by Mr. Hausard. [Note from 'm' to JH on verso: 'Have you not the "railiamutard" Indexes already at the Mint?']
Accepts invitation to Lord Mayor's conversazione on 8 June.
Legal problems with copper coins for New Brunswick.
JH should receive authority soon for appointing John Goldsmith. George Rennie is angry that E. W. Ward gathered valuable information from Rennie regarding machinery for Sydney branch mint, but then gave contract to another manufacturer. Expect Treasury Board to ask JH for report on this. Perhaps Ward can 'pacify' Rennie.
Detained in travel; will return Monday. Recommends John Goldsmith as supplementary clerk. Advises against transferring Henry Finch or F. R. Brande from Coining to Melting departments.
Surprised by length of spectrum produced by the combustion of metals, using electricity.
HF and F. R. Brande received similar appointments, but HF's annual salary is £100 while Brande's is £150. Asks JH to raise HF's salary to £150. [JH annotation: Replied on 19 July.]
Disappointed by JH's response. Believes HF's case is identical to that of F. R. Brande. Lists benefits accruing to Brande that HF does not have. Asks JH to reconsider raise in HF's salary.
Still believes that HF's experience and competence are equal to those of F. R. Brande. Plans to appeal directly to Treasury.
Explains why JH considers HF's case to be different from that of F. R. Brande. Does not believe that HF's appeal to Treasury will be seriously considered.
JH may call on James Wilson this afternoon.
Arranges visit to Royal Mint for Prince Albert Edward and Prince Alfred.
Prince Albert has postponed visit to Royal Mint for two princes until after Easter.
