Collecting a new herbarium, currently has 3000 specimens of 150 species. Hopes to be an occasional correspondent with Smith.

Regrets being unable to attend Linnean Society anniversary meeting this year as he has a paper on the larch insect to submit to the Society, and wished to announce a new edition of his "Nereis Britannica". Undertook new edition over the winter in order to present a thesis sent to the Moscow Society of Natural History some years ago, in return for being made a member; he has added 30 plates to the 17 in the thesis, comprising the whole of 'Fucus', and has printed a limited number, though it will be cheaper than any new printed book.

He has been busy arranging the animals in Aristotle, in preparation for new edition of Stephen's "Thesaurus". Hopes Smith has been well in the two years since they last saw each other.

Received Smith's letter of 3 [September 1816]. Pleased Smith has received second edition of his "Nereis Britannica", a present he considers a "token of respect, considering the eminent place [Smith] fill[s] in the Department of Botany". Explains the work: added more plates to the first edition in order to include all British known species, and to offer arrangement on Linnean principles. Only 100 copies printed, with an additional 50 copies of the arrangement with extract from preface to be sent to foreign seats of learning. He received extra stimulus for his work on receipt of Gmelin's catalogue of lichens; thinks Smith is the right person to reform this genus. Thanks for Smith's remarks on his generic names, which will be amended.

Acknowledges recipt of Smith's 14 guineas and encloses catalogue of remaining book stock of the particular concern.

Sends above mentioned books, which have been much sought after following death of [Thomas] Johnes, has no doubt they will be much dearer. Offers to purchase another copy due to be sold on 29 June. Will enquire into the plates and blocks.

The coppers to Smith's "Tour to Hafod" are still in the possession of [Joseph Constantine] Stadler [(fl 1788-1820), engraver]; Stadler will not deliver them without an order from Smith, asks that Smith writes authorising to "sell to best advantage", would be interested in purchasing them himself. Asks if there is any engraved portrait of Smith available other than that in [Robert] Thornton's [(c 1768-1837), physician and writer on botany] "[A new illustration of the sexual system of] Linnaeus".

[Smith has briefly annotated his reply on verso of second folio:] "get £11.11/ of Longman & Co. I will give you my print by W Lane".

Apologises for not acknowledging receipt of payment from Smith. Sent a copy of the "Insects" as requested [probably Smith's "The natural history of the rarer lepidopterous insects of Georgia" (1797)], happy to supply Smith with any books, Abbot is marked 22 guineas.

Thanks for Smith's portrait, with which he intends to illustrate a copy of the "Tour to Hafod" along with portrait of [Thomas] Johnes. Sorry they have not yet sold the coppers [for "Hafod"] yet, [Joseph Constantine] Stadler [(fl 1788-1820), engraver] objects to taking them. Hopes Smith "will not be a looser by [his] American friend".

Manuscripts received from [William] Roscoe, including Caesar's "Commentaries" and "Praeses fid."; and a Livy which is apparently the actual copy sent by Cosmo de Medici to Alfonso, King of Naples, as a peace offering and mentioned in Roscoe's "Life of Lorenzo de Medici". Roscoe informs him that Mr Jones has adopted Smith's advice for a regular system of "three [book] binders besides himself constantly employed". Roscoe has sat for his portrait with [Sir Martin Archer] Shee [(1769-1850) portrait painter and writer].

Laments [William] Roscoe's misfortunes [collapse of his business interests in 1816]. [Dawson] Turner, his wife and family have promised to visit.

Hopes Smith received last letter of 21 January 1815, has had no news of him except for [Aylmer Bourke] Lambert mentioning having seen "Eclogae" at Smith's house. Hunnermann has brought the last fasciculus of [Nikolaus von Jacquin's] "Stapeliae" for Sir Joseph Banks and Lambert, hopes Smith will not think he has gone "backward" in the direction of their artists. Has arranged a new method of conveying books to Vienna, assuming the "derangement" of the affairs of Messrs White has prevented Smith from sending his promised books. Uses a copy of the "English Encyclopedia" [Rees' "Cyclopedia" to which Smith contributed botanical articles], wishes that the work's plan allowed Smith to complete the genera with all their species. Sending ninth and tenth fascicules of his "Eclogae" and synopsis of his father's "Stapeliae" soon.
