Please write [H. J. Temple, Viscount] Palmerston on behalf of Fearon Fallows, candidate for director of future observatory at Cape of Good Hope.
Learned of vacancy in Lucasian Professorship at Cambridge. Wrote to [T. W.] Hornbuckle explaining why JH declines. Asks JW's support for Charles Babbage.
Wanted [JH] to become Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, but electors favor one of Heads. This will also operate against Charles Babbage.
Dr. [William] French withdrew candidacy for Lucasian Professorship. JH again attests to Charles Babbage's qualifications for that position, which includes seat on Board of Longitude.
Restriction to reside constantly [at Cambridge] may deter Charles Babbage from position of Lucasian Professor.
JW has been at St. John's for fifty years. Wishes JH well in preparing for marriage. JH is entitled to quarters dividend from [feast of] St. Thomas 'to Lady day next.' Notify JW when wedding occurs. JH's fellowship will then be vacant. Please bring bride to visit Cambridge.
Received JH's 'Fourth Series of Observations...' [1831] on double stars. Donated it to College library.
Delighted by JH's discovery of orbit of Gamma Virginis. JH has conclusively established 'the indefinite extent and uniformity of the principle of gravitation.' Invites JH and wife to visit Cambridge.
Commissioned to ask JH to select painter and to sit for half-length portrait to be placed in Old House at St. John's. Received JH's paper on the measures of double stars.
Flattered by JW's request [see JH's 1832-6-8] for portrait. Business matters delay JH selecting artist.
