The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Replies to JH about the date of the transit of Mercury [see JH's 1864-1-[26]].
Offers some possible explanation for what the unnamed observer saw [see GA's 1860-3-1].
Is preparing a list of nebulae and their positions; does GA think anyone would print them?
Suggests preparing an estimate of the cost of preparing and printing a nebula catalogue so JH can approach the R.S.L. [see GA's 1862-1-24].
Ready to send nebula data to GA for reduction; question of dates need decisions [see GA's 1862-1-30].
Is sending first part of observational data for nebula catalogue [see GA's 1862-3-31].
Forgot, in earlier note [see JH's 1862-4-2], to indicate agreement with GA's suggestions [see GA's 1862-3-31].
Material sent by JH [see JH's 1862-4-2] arrived safely.
Acknowledgment of receipt of more material from JH [see GA's 1862-4-3].
Needs to know, from JH, the date of the nebula observations [see GA's 1862-4-9].
Responds carefully to the question of observational, and reduction, dates [see GA's 1862-4-12].
Acknowledges receipt of more material from JH [see JH's 1862-4-13].
Has now sent the last of the nebula observations to be reduced for printing [see GA's 1862-4-16].
Sends JH a copy of the form to be used for reduced observations [see JH's 1862-4-17].
Approves of form for reduced observations [see GA's 1862-4-24] and sends GA payment against expenses.
Acknowledges receipt of payment [see JH's 1862-4-25]; asks for final approval of printing structure for the nebula catalogue.
Provides final intended structure of the nebula catalogue page [see GA's 1862-4-26].
Seeks clarification of the position of one of the listed nebulae [see JH's 1862-4-30].
Provides the information in response to GA's request for the position of one nebula [see GA's 1862-5-27].
The R.S.L. grant is almost used up; how much more money will be needed for the nebula catalogue [see GA's 1862-6-25]?
