The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Asks GS about ordering instruments from [George] Wilson.
Inquiring about the cost of instruments being shipped.
Writing on JH's behalf, MH begs JH be excused from writing a memoir of C. F. Gauss, as JH is very ill.
Reminds WB that Mint rules do not permit paying skilled laborer's wages to casual employees such as Patrick Shanahan.
HF's proposal for new position of assistant resident assayer deviates from procedures for reorganized Mint by avoiding usual course of promotion. Use services of E. L. J. Ridsdale instead. If Ridsdale is incompetent, he must be notified that his probation year is unsatisfactory.
JH's health is worse. Please expedite JH's request to resign from mastership of Mint. Seeks HT's approval to turn JH's duties over to W. H. Barton.
Approves HT's choice of H. D. Harness to succeed JH as Master of Mint. Characteristics for which HT should look in selecting JH's successor if Harness is not available.
Unable to perform Mint duties. Doctor directed JH to country for four to five weeks of complete rest. JH notified Lord Palmerston [H. J. Temple] and asked to be relieved of Mastership.
Mint debt is too great. If G. Baillie cannot liquidate soon, inform Treasury about Mint's shortage of cash. Instructions regarding reports and duties that must be completed before end of March.
JH is paralyzed and in pain. Appreciates [WB]'s efforts to keep [Mint] running smoothly. Comments on JH's successor. Decision to contract out Crimean medal simplifies Mint's responsibilities. Review Mint structure and systems. Invite bids for Kaffir medal. Disappearance of L. C. Wyon's wax model of Kaffir medal.
Procedure for E. W. Ward to recover expenses for construction of Sydney branch mint. Interview [W. O.] Young for particulars on shipments of materials. Discusses justification of Patrick Shanahan's wages. L. C. Wyon submitted wax model of Kaffir medal, but JH recalls that Treasury asked for drawing.
[?]'s model was forwarded. [W. H.] Barton will communicate results back to [?].
Extraordinary demand for gold and silver coin in 1852-54 has subsided. Reports disposition of twelve Custom House employees who were assigned to Mint as temporary clerks for this period.
Agrees to pay Patrick Shanahan five shillings per day, but JH believes this to be 'very high wages' for unskilled labor and requires twelve hours attendance each day. Leonard Wyon had prepared wax model of Kaffir medal. Dismiss Charles Stiles.
Approves delegating E. L. J. Ridsdale to represent [WB] in 'attending the Pyx' during assay process. Does not approve of transferring Ridsdale before his probationary year as assayer is completed.
Delayed paying [W. O.] Young until JH approves papers on Hannibal claim [for ship's salvage].
Encloses two Mint documents relating to wages for Patrick Shanahan and another worker. JH failed to return papers on Hannibal claim.
In JH's report on state of Crimean Medal to Lord Panmure [Fox Maule], be aware that Benjamin Wyon may not have working dies ready when promised.
Sends letter from Mr. Roberts, memo on silver, and other papers. R. F. Suft ordered boxes to be made.
Policy on adding alloy to gold coins. Reviews JH's instructions for WB during JH's absence. Hopes JH will heal. Should WB hunt up G. Baillie again regarding Ceylon coinage?
