Sending some observations on a comet which appeared last month. Has had the pendulum up for some weeks but has been unable to carry out many observations owing to official duties. Has been working a good deal on occultations. Wishes some had been published as they are of great practical use.
Invitation to dinner.
Welcomes astronomical correspondence. Is grateful for having his name proposed as a member of the Astronomical Society. Comments on the work of the Observatory. Would like the memoir of Edward Troughton.
Sending his book on Theoretical and Practical Astronomy. Also sends books for Thomas Catton. Comments on some of the varying observations made at observatories.
Accidentally found some verses on a scrap of paper, and wondered if it would fit the music of Cherry Ripe; sends verses to MK.
Asks MK's permission to allow a close friend to make use of the words once sent to her by JH as suitable for the music of Cherry Ripe.
Thanks for the kind reception afforded him at Slough. Sends a copy of [J. H.?] Schröder's paper on the discoveries of William Herschel. Also sends some observations of the late solar eclipse made in Holland.
Has received the regulations of the Astronomical Society of London—a great encouragement to astronomers. Has made observations on the orbit of the comet. Has sent two memoirs to T. M. Brisbane.
Honored on being elected Foreign Member of the Astronomical Society of London. Finds that the comet he observed in January had already been seen by J. N. Nicollet and J. L. Pons. Saw the remarkable appearance on the dark part of the moon noticed by Henry Kater. Thinks Kater's theory is wrong. Will soon be bringing out a paper on the moon's volcanoes.
Regrets to hear of the poor health of Sir William Herschel. Would like a few lines of Sir William's handwriting for his autograph collection.
Can he meet JH at the Astronomical [Society] on the 13th?
