The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Edited the last volumes of the Encyclopaedia Metropolitana. Needs JH to summarize main points of his treatises on light and sound for the general preface.
Saw article in the [London] Times about Lord Rosse's telescope. Has received a letter from [James] South. Asks for information from JH for private use. [Francesco] del Vico has observed triple stars, but HS thinks the telescope by [R. A.] Cauchoix is flawed.
Encloses copy of a paper for JH's comments. Regarding reviews of GA's paper on 'Tides.'
Has received Howard Elphinstone's observations. Has had an interview with Edward Sabine who has arranged for observations to be forwarded to WB. Would like JH's views on publication of some of these observations.
It will be quite convenient for JH to visit him on Friday. Sister's health is improved. Delay in the celestial maps ordered.
Thought JH had given up interest in Meteorological Observations until he saw his report in the B.A.A.S. meeting. Would like his comments on Meteorological Observations to be made at Nice to where he is now going. Is taking the big object-glass and eye pieces.
Names committee, including JH, to superintend 'translation & publication of scientific memoirs.' [Printed note regarding] grants of money.
Asks JH to prevail on Lord Ashley [A. A. Cooper] to revise money laws in House of Commons for benefit of working classes. Encloses tracts [issued by Society for the Emancipation of Industry].
Was pleased to have had the opportunity of learning more of England and its people. EM visited JH's aunt Caroline in Hanover, and reports the death of Mrs. [Sophia] Beckedorff at age 87. Sends greetings to Madame Gerlach.
History of husband's [W. H. Smyth] exchange of 1836 letters with T. R. Robinson regarding Gamma Virginis and JH's confirmation of W. H. Smyth's discovery. Sends copy of Augustus De Morgan's letter on renaming constellations.
