The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Letter will receive immediate attention.
No decision has yet been made about closing or moving the observatory, but thanks JH for his letter [see JH's 1852-5-19], which may become useful support for retaining the observatory.
Is sending a mathematical work on the stability of a moving locomotive, and hopes it will interest JH. YV would like it presented to the R.S.L. Refers to YV's work on double stars.
Understands that JH has seen GA's letter to H. D. Harness on 'Seigneurage' question. Encloses GA's response to Harness's most recent letter.
WB read JH's note to Cambridge University Commissioners on 10 June. Commission will meet on 1 July.
Will send WB's notes regarding Cambridge University Commissioners' discussion of tuition. Expects fuller treatment at next meeting [1 July].
Encloses copy of HH's answer to George Arbuthnot, who agrees with HH but raised interesting questions. Describes Dorsetshire.
Correspondence between HH and George Arbuthnot regarding comparative advantages of exporting coins versus bullion. Requests JH's opinion. Quick sketch of HH's views about air pump apparatus.
Leonard Wyon's private work at Mint should have terminated on 30 Apr. HH warned Wyon not to use Mint apparatus for Punjabi or Exhibition medals after May. [H. C. C.] Owen requested reasonable extension. JH should close Punjabi account then ask Exhibition committee to set number of medals that they need and hold Wyon to that. Further explanation of air pump apparatus.
Thanks JH for reviewing HH's recommendation for improving air pump. Suggests way to increase work output of Sizing room. Advises JH to simplify pay scale for Mint workers. Promotion of young workers.
Sends Audit office letter. Address of HH's next destination.
Asks clarification of JH's plans for countersigning drafts from Mint.
Believes JH's handwriting is sufficiently clear for official correspondence. Denies request for additional worker to serve as JH's personal clerk.
Supports JH's plan to hire F. R. Brande as supernumerary clerk and Henry Finch to replace Brande, but tell them explicitly that these are not permanent positions.
Approves delay in JH's report on coinage until JH can determine how unusual present demand will affect Mint operations.
Asks JH to call on CT when convenient. [JH annotation: Discussed objection of Lord C [Chandos?=Richard Grenville] to hiring Brande.]
Indicates that trials have been made with a 'trumpeted cannon,' and JH is welcome to request further trials to be made at Woolwich Arsenal.
Note of thanks to JH for his kind wishes.
Invites JH to visit and meet the Austrian Minister 'who delights in the study of the heavens.'
