The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Concerned that GM misinterpreted meaning of JH's 22 Mar. letter. Apologizes to JH and H. D. Harness. Troubled by fundamental changes in Mint. Withdraws GM's earlier letter.
Just received JH's official letter. Will meet with H. D. Harness next week. Prefers to have GM's contract legally end on 30 Apr.
Grieved by delay in leasing of refinery. GM completed inventory of refinery seven weeks ago and needs to leave for Germany soon. Urges JH to finalize lease.
Asks JH to endorse GM's enclosed memorial to Treasury. Did not include financial accounts, which are still incomplete. Encloses letters to JH and H. D. Harness.
Encloses GM's memorial to Treasury, with financial accounts included, for JH's approval.
Doctor urges GM to move to warmer climate. Please finalize terms for GM's retirement so GM may leave London.
Thanks JH for arranging terms of retirement for GM, who is now free to leave England. Presumes that GM's pension began as of last July.
Delighted to learn by JH's letter of 6 Dec. that JH plans to provide for men at Mint who worked under GM. Will prepare statements of their services and pay scales.
