The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Members of R.S.L. committee to study Kew observatory. Copies of correspondence between ES and W. R. Birt. If Birt is retained, expenses of Kew observatory will exceed money granted by B.A.A.S. Before applying for government assistance, JH and G. B. Airy must agree on plan.
JH may meet with Kew committee in London on 16 June. William Mann will probably replace late T. G. Taylor in Madras. Suggests that W. R. Birt replace Mann at Cape of Good Hope. Position at Kew would not be suitable to Birt.
William Mann's application to replace late T. G. Taylor [at Madras observatory] has been approved by H.E.I.C. B.A.A.S. cannot offer good position at Kew to W. R. Birt. Goals of B.A.A.S. committee to report on Kew observatory. Please return [T. R.] Robinson's account of William Parson's telescope.

Objects to appointment of G. B. Airy as sole referee in determining contract for making Great Clock at Westminster Palace. Forwards copies of letters and papers that demonstrate Airy's prejudice and ill will toward BV and Mr. Whitehurst.
Permission is granted for JH to order construction of dome for Cape of Good Hope observatory.

Will notify JH when personal effects of Caroline Lucretia Herschel have been inventoried and distributed according to JH's directions. Questions fate of [telescope] given to [J. F. L.] Hausmann by Caroline Herschel now that Hausmann is dead. Suggests donating it to observatory at Göttingen or to 'Archiv' in Hanover.
Financial matters are dealt with relating to the purchase of a telescope [for Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope].
