JH appointed to committee with G. B. Airy and Thomas Henderson to study the reductions of the calculations on N. L. Lacaille's stars. They will be granted £189.
JH appointed to head a committee including George Peacock, Humphrey Lloyd, and Edward Sabine to study meteorological instruments. They will be granted £400. The grant will be presented in Glasgow next September.
Admiralty assigned Erebus and Terror to Antarctic expedition. Asks JH and Lord Northampton to request approval from Treasury for procurement of scientific instruments. Wants to consult with JH soon.
Wants to order three complete sets of magnetic and meteorological instruments for observations at St. Helena, at Cape of Good Hope, and aboard expedition ships. Admiralty cannot furnish instruments. Asks JH to continue efforts to obtain authorization from Treasury.

Wants to see magnetic observations made by Navy lieutenant who accompanied Sir John Franklin to Van Diemen's Land.
Advises JH to have Foreign Office send letter to Col. Campbell, consul in Alexandria, to accompany R.S.L.'s letter to Pasha. Otherwise, R.S.L. letter may be ignored. Good news from [Duncan Stewart]. JS is not going to Scotland; may visit Slough instead.
Chairman of H.E.I.C. granted permission for Major [Tenis] to delay departure to India for one month in order to become better acquainted with instruments to be used in magnetic observatories there.
Encloses description of two magnetometers approved by Humphrey Lloyd, and proposes to make these for £70.
