The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Thanks CM for his communication about the aloe. JH and family are about to embark for the Cape, and JH will keep CM's interests in mind while there.
A note along with letters from R. A. Cauchoix, the telescope maker, and [J. C. Spencer,] Lord Althorp, about the B.A.A.S.; JH is trying to clean up observation reports before leaving for the Cape.
Received £500 from J. C. Spencer (Lord Althorp) for reduction under the direction of G. B. Airy of earlier planetary observations. Althorp conferred with Lord Grey. Conjectures possible need of a larger grant.
Will write [J.-B.] Biot, but does not know to which enquiries Biot wishes JH to respond. Also wants to thank Biot for his kindness. S.-D. Poisson in a statement before the Académie des sciences has misdescribed JH's planned voyage.
Has received payment from [John] Murray [for review of Mary Somerville's Mechanism of the Heavens ?]. Cannot answer Mrs. Somerville's question about poles of maximum cold.
Regrets he will not get to visit Chelsea before departing for the Cape of Good Hope. Sends regards to family.

Confirms receipt of WS's last letter from Hamburg. Advises of his departure to Cape. Requests 'measure of 3000 double stars.' Directs WS's attention to 'remarkable stars' and urges WS to procure JH's Astronomy. Asks WS to solicit [F. W.] Bessel's correspondence for JH. Adds [W. H.] Smyth's address.
Addresses last words before departing to Cape. Informs AQ that results concerning absorption of light will be in next London and Edinburgh Philosophical Journal. One will be sent to AQ. Reminds AQ of promise to write JH at Cape.
Further about the telescope to be donated by Hugh Percy [see JH's 1833-8-15], along with a promise that JH will write to R. A. Cauchoix about the telescope.
Offers JF advice about the telescope mirror [?] and looks forward to seeing JF on his way to France.
Details about JH's upcoming voyage from Portsmouth [to Cape of Good Hope] and about an expedition going north from the Cape into Central Africa.
Thanks for sending results about conical polarization and introductory lecture on astronomy communicated through Francis Beaufort. Had hoped to send WH JH's yet to be printed catalogue of double stars.
About observing binary stars. JH has decided not to accept the offer of passage on a war ship to the Cape of Good Hope, as he wishes to be beholden to no one for the results of the expedition.
Congratulates JF on obtaining, after some difficulty, the Chair of Natural Philosophy at Edinburgh. Accepts offer to discuss meteorology with JF's relation Leslie Melville[?], and hopes to mention his actinometer.
Wishes JF well in [Edinburgh] and leaves addresses where JH may be reached [at the Cape].
JH preparing for his journey to Cape Town. Compiling a catalog of nebulae and clusters. Sending to CH a comparison of a new set of elements of Gamma Virginis and a set of observations of it from 1720-1833; JH asks CH to send a copy to Carl Gauss.
Sent to CH JH's fifth catalog of double stars. JH will send to CH his new nebulae observations very soon.
Ready to embark to Cape Town; JH expects to arrive at the end of January. Sent out the last proof sheet of JH's nebulae catalog last night.
