The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
WB is accepted as new assistant Coiner of Mint. Official appointment will follow.
After their contract expires on 13 May, Moneyers will continue their operations at Mint until importation of bullion ceases, at which time WB's duties as assistant Coiner will commence. Living accommodations are not yet available at Mint.
JH cannot recommend anyone of the sort requested in letter from Mr. Wallenstein.
Unable to attend today's conference on replacing present system of English writing with phonetic system such as 'Missionary Alphabet.' Hopes no final conclusions will be drawn without opportunity for further discussion. Gives JH's opinions and objections. Contrasts systems proposed by [Charles] Trevelyan, [J. B.] Gilchrist, and [Thomas] Young.
[Marked 'Private.'] JH found passage in Treasury's letter to Benedetto Pistrucci that could contradict the denial by Lord Maryborough [William Wellesley-Pole] of Pistrucci 's claim to lifetime job and salary at Mint.
[Marked 'Private.'] Found written evidence of the denial in 1825 by Lord Maryborough [William Wellesley-Pole] of lifetime tenure at Mint for Benedetto Pistrucci. Suggests contacting [W. R.] Hamilton for clarification.
Returns letter from C. E. Trevelyan. Awaits final conclusion in difficult case of Benedetto Pistrucci.
Fears wounding feelings of Benjamin Wyon if JH is seen as ordering dies for Crimean medal from Wyon's relative and rival. Sends official letter that relieves JH of responsibility for choosing artist for medal.
Gratitude for nursing JH's daughter Amelia after severe burns. Taking JH's son William to Folkstone. Regards to Miss Lipscombe.
Rapid changes in science leave JH unable to recommend newest things in organic chemistry. Suggests works by H. V. Regnault or Justus von Liebig, and Lyon Playfair's work on chemistry of foods. Notes error in Liebig's work on body chemistry.
Moneyer's former policy has resulted in two pay scales for Mint employees. Asks help in standardizing pay scale. Repair cost for air pump may be double original estimate. Treasury rejected JH's appeal on behalf of F. R. Brande; plans to appeal to Chancellor of Exchequer.
[A. J.] Ellis was correct; JH used earlier version of proof by [C. F.] Gauss in Theoria Motus Corporum Coelestium [1809] and was not aware of newer proof. But Ellis's objection to JH's proof applies only to properties of space.
Encloses copy of JH's letter to C. E. Trevelyan announcing decisions by EE and Robert Rintoul to decline offices of Chief Coiner and Assistant Coiner, respectively.
Instructions for assaying Indian coins.
HF's proposal for new position of assistant resident assayer deviates from procedures for reorganized Mint by avoiding usual course of promotion. Use services of E. L. J. Ridsdale instead. If Ridsdale is incompetent, he must be notified that his probation year is unsatisfactory.
JH made clear on 13 Mar. that HF's position in reorganized Mint would be that of newly entering junior clerk and that F. R. Brande's position warranted more seniority.
C. E. Trevelyan has confirmed JH's recollection that HF agreed to annual salary of £100 when entering reorganized Mint.
Formal announcement of HF's nomination by Treasury to fill office of junior clerk in Mint Office vacated by [C. B.] Piers. HF is assigned to W. T. Brande in Coining department.
HF's year of probation in Coining department ends today. JH will recommend appointing HF to permanent position, but HF must take responsibility to acquaint himself with operations of all other departments if HF wishes further promotion. Admonishes HF to behave with dignity and adapt to new Mint organization without 'harking back after the old state.'
Assurance that compensation for Moneyers, whose contract terminates tomorrow, will not be affected by Moneyers' continuing to coin on temporary basis.
