The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Pendulum experiments to be conducted at stations of Great Indian Trigonometrical Survey.
Plans to confer with [J. T.] Walker and F. A. T. Winnecke from Pulkovo to learn of Russian pendulum experiments before reporting to R.S.L. council. J. H. Pratt's measurement of polar axis and theory about earth's center of gravity.
News of Herschel family. JH asks for information about 'India Stock' [investments].
JH's India [H.E.I.C.] investments. Looking forward to seeing John [Herschel; son of JH] when he returns on leave.
Encloses copy of JH's essay entitled The Yard, the Pendulum, & the Metre... (1863). Speculates on causes for deviation in pendulum measurements. Recommends using torsion gravimeters in 'proposed operation.'
Responds to [?]'s 'passionate desire to become an astronomer.' Distinguishes between doing astronomy and enjoying its discoveries. Explains training procedures.
If enclosed item is accepted for publication in Photographic News, JH wants to inspect its press, especially 'as respects the Cipher,' and to receive 25 copies.
Encloses photograph of JH for Madame [Polko?]. Would like to receive photograph of [Edoard] Vogel. Will send six copies of JH's translations of J. C. F. Schiller's The Walk. JH corrected Schiller's error in line 85.
Note accompanying report on paper by G. B. Airy.
Responds to GS's letters of 1864-2-4 about procedures for printing JH's 'Catalogue of Nebulae' and receipt of William Herschel's manuscripts .
Further about nebulae catalogue [see JH's 1864-2-5].
Agrees to review paper [see GS's 1864-5-12].
Pendulum experiments are already approved at principal stations in Russian trigonometrical survey. Recent communication from J. H. Pratt to R.S.L. about pendulum observations.
Committee pamphlet expressed incorrect representation of JH's views on changes in British standards of measurement.
Writes to introduce JH's son William James and his new bride to the Lyell's. Both JH and his wife, Margaret, are suffering from illness.
Gives CB permission to publish the portions of letters requested by him. JH tells CB that he has responded to John Davy's letter in the PM.
Responds to GS's 1864-1-16.
About observing a grain-shaped spot on the sun; greetings to Friedrich Winnecke.
Sends a circular and JH's response to it for possible publication.
Thanks JG for the receipt of astronomical and meteorological observations made at Washington Observatory.
