The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Does not think that RH would be satisfied with the position of Assistant Secretary of the R.S.L., as it is largely clerical, and would not allow much time for chemical or photographical experiments. JH is not aware whether there is a position available at the Royal Institution, but would be willing to speak to Michael Faraday.
Thanks MW for the beautiful picture created by her out of one of JH's sketches made on a journey to Europe. At MW's request, JH sends along some astronomical work in the handwriting of JH's father, William.

Will attempt to arrange publication and reception of AQ's work in England. Grieves that AQ has suffered attacks because of his zeal in meteorological observations.
Requests information on behalf of the Magnetic and Meteorological Committee of the B.A.A.S. Desires AQ's assessment of past achievements by 1845-3-10. Lists works to be forwarded before end of year.
Mortified at Punch cartoon libeling WS's sovereign. Enjoyed WS's visit and invites Otto Struve again. Request WS to give [G. B.] Airy his 'full impressions' of Munich glass as opposed to British glass. Supports British glass for Cape's colonial instruments.
Gratefully accepts role as President Elect for 1845 B.A.A.S. meeting.
Appreciates foresight, but cannot commit to be president of B.A.A.S. meeting at Cambridge in summer of 1846. Date is too far away; personal and domestic commitments are pressing.
Has been put (with GA and W. S. Stratford) on a B.A.A.S. committee to publish the J. J. L. Lalande and the N. L. Lacaille star catalogues [see GA's 1842-11-7]; sends draft request for a grant.
Encloses letter from Edward Sabine suggesting establishment of magnetic and meteorological observatory in colony of Ceylon.
Requests papers relative to a preface to the catalogue of [N. L.] Lacaille's stars, so that the catalogue may be printed.
Requests information from RS on the life of Francis Baily for a biographical sketch JH was asked to draw up for a special meeting of the R.A.S.]
Sent his letter of 2 Oct. to Woburn Place. Has since learned that RS moved to Reading. Requests again information on the life of Francis Baily, especially on Baily's pendulum experiments.
Thanks RS for his letter on Francis Baily. Wants a copy of the engraving of Baily's portrait that RS is preparing, and thinks RS ought to make arrangements for its distribution among R.A.S. members.
Does not think Francis Baily's relatives should take part in JH's presentation on Baily to the R.A.S., but if they have asked to do so, they should not be refused. Would like a copy of Caroline Herschel's silhouette. Is'facing the engraver's hands' with his nebula, and must get the plate of JH's portrait, which RS placed at the disposal of the Duke of Northumberland.
Adds remarks to his previous comments [JH 1344-11-17] on Francis Baily's relatives participating in the memorial to Baily.
