The Charles Darwin Collection
The Darwin Correspondence Project is publishing letters written by and to the naturalist Charles Darwin (1809–1882). Complete transcripts of letters are being made available through the Project’s website (www.darwinproject.ac.uk) after publication in the ongoing print edition of The Correspondence of Charles Darwin (Cambridge University Press 1985–). Metadata and summaries of all known letters (c. 15,000) appear in Ɛpsilon, and the full texts of available letters can also be searched, with links to the full texts.
Looks forward to a visit from JVC and family in August.
Sheets of vol. 1 of Descent [2d ed.] are going to printer;
new edition of Coral reefs is half printed.
Would be glad to hear of a collected edition of his works [in Germany], but has no opinion on how it would sell. Has been surprised to learn that in England some think uniform collected works sell best. Tells JVC his publication plans and other details to guide him on extent of a "collected works".
Descent corrections have been laborious and troublesome.
Descent [2d English ed.] will not be published until November. Will send JVC first sheet of revised proofs soon.
Pleased to hear of success of JVC’s lectures.
Summer plans have changed. Does not yet know when he will take a month’s holiday.
Asks JVC if he can provide introductions in Leipzig and Dresden for his son George.
Has not yet received any revised sheets of Descent [2d English ed.].
Advises JVC on how his publisher might deal with problem of getting satisfactory heliotype copies for 2d [German] edition of Expression.
Regrets that he will again be away in August, when JVC might have come for a visit.

His new work [Insectivorous plants] will make a rather big book.

Insectivorous plants is so large that Murray will publish Climbing plants as a separate little book. Hopes Insectivorous plants is worth translating.
Asks WRSR to explain a diploma and letter he has received from Russia, so he can return his thanks. [Probably a reference to CD’s being made an honorary fellow of the Society of Naturalists of the Imperial Kazan University in 1875.]
Thanks JVC for corrections in Insectivorous plants. Explains confusion of fluid and dry measures. The work has sold well in England.
Repeats suggestion that JVC employ someone to translate Climbing plants under his supervision.
