The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Is sending a query from Florence, also a letter from Vincenzio Antinori, which please return. Additional facts supporting his views expressed in the Decline of Science. Frederick Augustus (Duke of Sussex) has been challenged over government of the R.S.L. Engine progresses well. [Also contains draft of reply which is the same as JH's 1831-9-13.]
Is sending mirror in perfect state for Vincenzio Antinori at Florence, together with his letter. Regarding Gerard Moll's book. Has no time to spare to attend the [B.A.A.S.] meeting at York.
Please could he obtain through Miss Caroline Herschel several copies of the Hannover Gazette which includes his own name when he was awarded the Guelphic Order. There is talk that Frederick Augustus (Duke of Sussex) is going to Ireland.
Will contact his aunt for the Hannover Gazette. Wishes to see Joseph Clement about moving the telescope.
One of Joseph Clement's workmen will be coming down to work on JH's telescope. Gives rates of pay, etc. Has just got the Treasury to give their order for the completion of the buildings.
Had to return without seeing him owing to his mother's health. Regarding the present controversies. Is annoyed by the conduct of David Brewster.
Regarding J. F. Daniel[l]'s lecture. His own views on the validity of the attacks. Regarding JH's opinion on David Brewster.
Recent loss [death of his mother] has put the controversies temporarily aside. Gives further news of various matters which affect him. Feels angry at David Brewster's manner.
Has just heard of the death of Lady Herschel. Will be at Slough for the funeral on Friday.
Regarding the situation on the Cape of Good Hope. Is sending a paper of Dr. [William?] Henry. David Brewster suffered last Thursday.
Regarding CB's failure in political matters. Sees cause for congratulation. Would he tell him where he can see the manufacture of springs.
Regarding the results of the Finsbury election. Has been invited to a public dinner and would like him to come, together with some of his scientific friends. Part of his machine is ready.
Will attend CB's dinner on Wednesday. Can JH bring his brother-in-law? Will call at CB's house before the dinner.
Is delighted that JH is coming to dinner.
Has glanced over the papers and made a few corrections. Suggests one point for alteration.
The first evening party is on Saturday, and hopes JH will be able to come.
Is trying to prepare his book for the press, and is suffering from a severe attack of influenza.
Will not be in town until early June owing to pressure of work. Thanks for information on Van Dieman's Land, but they have decided on the Cape.
