The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Writes to thank WR for the paper on the thermodynamic theory of waves he sent; JH is too ill to respond or even to deal with the analysis in the paper. Nonetheless, JH does make some suggestions for WR's consideration.
Will mention JH's subject for investigation to Sir William Thomson. Is busy with Committee on Ships of War.
Cannot afford fees he must pay to be ordained. Asks for financial assistance. Includes letters from a tutor and a professor.
Asks permission to send JH several articles he wrote concerning optics.
Asks where JH's opinion that subsidence of land is caused by the pressure of material accumulation is stated in detail.
Appreciates JH's opinion regarding variability of climate, although it disagrees with his own. His views are not provable and the question remains one of probability.
[Richard?] Proctor [?] agrees with JR's views on Cosmical Climates. Re-presents his theory because he feels he did not state it fairly in his earlier [1870-5-27] letter.
Discusses his thoughts on high powered definition and residual aberration in microscopes. Thinks they may be applicable to telescopes.
Sends packet from [John] Hennessey to JH for his perusal. Discusses recent weather. Wants JH's opinion of self-recording meteorological instruments. Mentions wreck of the Hansa.
Sends telegram from the Germania. Discusses crew of Hansa [see 15.292]. Asks if JH wants certain experiments done at Kew. Troubled by [W. A.] Miller's sudden illness.
Sends notice from [C. P. B.] Walker regarding pendulum experiments in India. Would welcome suggestions for new experiments in India.
Asks JH to write to Earl de Grey [G. F. S. Robinson] stating JS's qualifications for position on Royal Commission 'for inquiring into the question of the Extension of State Aid to Sciences.'
Cannot address Earl de Grey [G. F. S. Robinson] concerning members of Royal Commission without a request from the Earl. Cannot, therefore, write on behalf of JS [see JS's 1870-3-8].
Thanks JH for drawing of solar maculae from 1854-61. Some hesitancy about the accuracy of [Alexander?] Wilson's observations and hypotheses. Sixty people wish to travel to Spain to see eclipse of the sun.
Asks whether WS has photographs of the sun for 21 and 22 April. Notes how curious sunspot activity has been. Doubts that such is reconcilable with the notion of 'meteoric in-falls.'
Is sending solar autographs. Notes that in groups of spots the larger precede the smaller spots. Can JH form any theories from this?
Detached postscript that discusses the margins of the two photographs, which seem to show that all planets are in the near hemisphere.
Is returning March heliographs. Discusses the appearance of the spots. Has not received the April heliographs.
Wants to compare Mr. Titterton's photographs of the spot groups to [Warren] de La Rue's. Has tried to determine if some localities regularly have spots.
Desires permission to present JH's 'diagram of "macularity"' to the R.A.S.
