The Joseph Dalton Hooker Collection
The Joseph Dalton Hooker Correspondence Project at Kew is making available online the personal and scientific correspondence of the botanist and explorer Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817–1911), Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens’ Kew from 1865-1885. The project was conceived by staff of The University of Sussex and Kew's Library, Art and Archive department and began as a partnership between Kew and the University of Sussex's Centre for World Environmental History. It has been made possible by support from the Stevenson Family Charitable Trust. JDH apologises for not sending his greetings on Brian Hodgson's birthday. JDH last wrote to Hodgson after hearing from Mrs Stirling about Arthur Grote's death. JDH & family are healthy despite the harsh winter weather. JDH has heard they are successfully making pure sulphate of quinine in Darjeeling. Chinese trade is increasing between Tibet & Darjeeling. Harriet Anne Thiselton-Dyer is unwell. The Mallets are going to Grasse. Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant-Duff is returning from India via Rome & the Riviera. Marianne North is pleased with her Alderley home [Mount House]. JDH will be staying at The Camp, Sunningdale for the foreseeable future. JDH & Hyacinth send their love to Susie [Susan Hodgson].
JDH writes to Sir William Turner Thiselton-Dyer to say that he will recommend Kirk as a candidate for membership of a society [The Athenaeum Club?]. JDH praises [George] King's Ficus work particularly regarding sexual difference in the flower, & says he has progressed beyond the work of [Guglielmo] Gasparrini, [Hermann Maximilian?] Solms-Laubach[?] & Miguel. JDH is encouraging King to work on Palms, Pandanus & Musa rather than the Perak flora. JDH is stunned by the Baccaurea King has sent. JDH is currently describing Bradleia. He mentions that [James Edward Tierney?] Aitchison[?] is upset by the omission of his name in a new order. JDH will be glad to get Sikkim Rhododendrons from Thiselton-Dyer.
