The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Fourth observatory, at Van Diemen's Land [Tasmania], will be conducted by J. H. Kay, to be landed from one of vessels [Terror and Erebus] bound for Antarctica. This vessel will also carry observers and instruments for stations at St. Helena and Cape.
Comments on letter received. Regrets replies about 'the Muriate of Chrome.'
JH began popular series on meteorology to 'suit your readers' over one year ago, but discovered excellent treatise by L. F. Kämtz and chose instead to translate that. 'Your letter' revived the idea.
Could not locate personal reference named Alexander Mackenzie in Cheltenham. Therefore, JH declines to employ 'F. E.'
Refer to 10 Sept. Morning Chronicle and 7 Sept. Literary Chronicle for biographies of William Herschel. Submit manuscript for JH's perusal before publication.
Instructions for sale and transfer of stocks according to William Herschel's will, and for payment of legacy to Johann Dietrich Herschel. Meet in broker's office at noon tomorrow.
Compares 'Products' principle with 'Sums' principle for numerical analysis of taxation in several boroughs. JH's opinion favoring Sums was quoted 'in the Assembly.'
Membership dues, voting privileges, and need for discussions after reading of papers [probably at B.A.A.S. meetings]. Suggests announcing at each adjournment what the next topic will be. Considers prohibiting any discussion following medical papers.
Box that [Thomas] Maclear indicated would contain Cape bulbs from Klapmuts, arrived yesterday containing common European roots. Perhaps wrong box was sent from London warehouse.

George Airy has written JH to say that he does not at this time wish to go to Dublin to offer himself as a candidate for the Andrews Professorship at Trinity College, Dublin. Asks advice on aspects of Airy's candidacy.
Offers the correspondent's friend the information that JH has received a letter indicating that John Henslow is a formidable candidate for the professorship of botany.
Has no objection to the recipient's republication of the 'Examples of the Differ. & Integl Calculus by Mr. Peacock,' to which JH contributed.
Appreciates receiving the curious fossil, even though JH knows little of such matters.
