The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Encloses a letter from Thomas Maclear to show how enthusiastic he is for the great telescope.
Encloses a note from F. W. Beechey explaining why there has been a delay with his paper for the Admiralty Manual.
Has forwarded the manuscript, with notes, to the Admiralty and JH should receive it in a few days. Leaves the arrangement to him. Did he receive his letter of 15 Jan. and a copy of his Southampton report?
Has found the plan of Sussex very useful on his travels. Comments on Brighton. Has seen his aunt and uncle. Has had no chance of visiting Clapham and so unable to send his sketch.
Andrew Graham has found another planet [Metis]. Gives readings made with the meridian circle of latest observations. Returns to Ireland soon.
Requesting that JH would send notices to all the new honorary members. Eleven testimonials are ready for his signature; would he sign them when next in town. Where shall he send the Cape newspapers?
Agrees with his proposals. Will meet him at Barclay the printers or if unable to manage then, will forward the testimonials to Somerset House for his signature.
Organizational matters related to R.A.S.; intrigued by AD's partial differential.
About authorship of an encyclopedia article, meeting arrangements, and the mathematical cleverness of his son William.
Thinks Herschel is getting on very well with his mathematics. Boys learn mathematics at a much earlier age now. Will have testimonials ready at Barclays if he will name the day. Will bring Cape newspapers to the Society.
Acknowledges receipt of JH's Cape Results by Holland Society of Sciences.
Gratitude for receipt of JH's Cape Results. Offers to send FK's complete series of micrometrical observations of [Neptune].
Received [WB's] packet. JH has influenza, will read manuscript after recovery.
Returned [WB's] manuscript with Admiralty notes last week. Concerned, because postal service lost C. R. Darwin's manuscript when JH returned it.
Last year JH agreed to review JF's paper [see JF's 1847-3-13] and to forward it to R.S. L. if it is accurate. JF now submits paper to JH.
