The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Will not come to the Mint tomorrow.
JH's description yesterday of events at Mint led HH to stay away. Surprised that JH wishes to see HH. No one should interfere between W. T. Brande and William Buckle.
Forwards note from unknown author. Direct HH's servants to come to HH's residence.
Silver coinage. If Mr. Mocatta cannot deliver silver, perhaps the Rothschilds in Paris can. Did JH obtain authority yet to equalize subsistence wages for workers in Melting and Coining departments?
Encloses letter from War Office. Current crisis in coin production has focused public scrutiny upon reorganized Mint system. '[W]e ... are on trial.' [JH annotation: Pensioners are complaining to War Office that they are not paid, due to lack of silver coins.]
[Marked 'Confidential.'] CT will respond to the Times query regarding Mint [production of silver coins]. Plan to meet with CT when H. D. Harness returns. Glad to hear that Mint workmen began 12-hour workdays on 25 Oct.
[Marked 'Confidential.'] Agrees with JH that assay of freshly minted coins may be eliminated [to reduce delivery time]. Keep official copy of JH's letter and send copy to CT. Anticipates no delay in new appointments at Mint when Mr. Forbes retires.
Thanks JH for processing payment of LW's compensation allowance. Will stop at Mint next week to examine letter from Treasury.
Shortage of silver coins at Bank of England. Explains recurring monthly drain of silver when ships crews, families, and pensioners must be paid. Begs JH to send £5000 of silver coin to Bank.
New emergency at Mint, created by demand for gold and silver coins by people and Bank of England. JH unable to cope alone. Directs HH to cancel vacation and return to assist.
Requests JH's opinion of H. P. Brougham's paper and reports of G. B. Airy and G. G. Stokes thereon.A
Happened to meet JH's wife, Margaret; was very pleased to see her in such good health. Has heard a rumor about a Bank of England resolution on decimalization [see GA's 1852-3-15].
The Bank of England will start to deal with weights of precious metals in decimals only [see GA's 1852-10-23]. JH responds to a letter in the Times about the shortage of silver coins.
