[Richard Jones?] agreed to prepare letter to Lord John [Russell?] but not to send it. Now learns that meeting is scheduled for tomorrow. Agrees with JH and [William] Empson that [Thomas] Maclear's work should be rewarded, but wants to move more deliberately.
Glad that Dr. [Duncan] Stewart received promise from Mr. Prinsep of cadetship [in H.E.I.C.] for Stewart's son. WS cannot promise same for young [George] Maclear but will add Maclear to list of applicants for WS's patronage.
Please return Treasury minutes regarding compensation for Moneyers so CT may alter it. JH may give copy of it to Moneyers. Returns Jasper Atkinson's application.
Returns JH's original schedule for Mint reform, with amendments.
Please send copy of R. L. Sheil's letter of 10 May 1849 regarding retirement of John Beckwith.
Treasury commissioners admit merits of claims by Mint officers, whom JH supports, but does not agree to pay raises. Calculating salaries for more years than officers have actually served would set bad precedent for other public offices.
Sends Mr. Benme's [?] letter and prospectus. Wants JH's opinion on whether the Queen should dedicate it.
Saw [Richard] Jones and stopped letter he was sending to Lord John [Russell]. Has consulted [John] Lefevre. Needs to tell JH what passed between [Sir William] Hodges and Lord John.
Sends proposed letter to Lord John [Russell]. Wants it signed by George Peacock, William Whewell, [John] Lefevre, JH, and the archbishop. [William] Hodges will deliver it.
