[Otto] Rosenberger has calculated perturbations of Halley's Comet by the inner planets. [Wilhelm] Beer and [J. H.] Mädler have a map of the moon and have located two moving spots on Jupiter. F. W. Bessel's assistant has reduced James Bradley's observation to constants of aberration and nutation.

Has been unable to locate the planetary nebulae; did JH give their places correctly, or is the instrument unequal to the task? Sends a comparison of John Pond's declinations and the Cape Zenith distances. Comments on the latitude of the Cape. The Hungerford got off yesterday.

Sends the thermometers he made at sea. Made them as accurately as he could. Introduces Lady William Bentinck.

Much obliged for JH looking over the observations. Comments on these and the accuracy of the Cape circle and mural circle. Will send his observations on Crucis.

Congratulations on the birth of an infant. Niccolo Cacciatore is still working with the meridian. There has been no fall of aereolites in Sicily in spite of reports in the papers.

Has arranged with Lady Herschel for Sir John to spend a night at the Observatory. Come early; then he can reverse the transit instrument. Is not satisfied with the performance of the transit clock. Intends to clean it. Is ready to adopt JH's suggestions for measuring the tides. Curious that JH and [T. G.?] Taylor should suggest similar plans for measuring the divisions of a mural circle.

Sending his observations of the recent comet. JH's journey has aroused great interest in Germany. Taking over the Observatory and expecting a visit from F. W. Bessel. Wilhelm Struve has planned a new observatory for St. Petersburg. Has met astronomer Manuel Johnson from St. Helena. C. F. Gauss has produced a method of observing the magnetic needle.

Prospects good for crossing Kalahari Desert and visiting Musalacatzie [Moselekatse], 'dreaded tyrant of the interior.' Heard reports of extraordinary animals and great inland lake. Describes planned itinerary and John Barrow's observations.

Found his recent stay at the remote German castle very restful. Gives details of a large flight of crows and compares it to nebulae. Cure for sore throats. Hopes the South Easters do not disturb him. Intends spending the winter in Paris. Hopes that JH is preparing a two volume work on his scientific experiences.

Thanks JH for meteorological observations at Cape. Wants to publish discoveries for scientists working in India. Will collect meteorological data with a special focus on atmospheric activity from all over Indian peninsula.

Sorry to involve JH in dispute with H. H. Gird over 120 dollars for horse. Will settle out of court. Sends two mineral specimens from Ascension [Island] and barometric observations.

Has received letters and books from England. Leave of absence of William Meadows and nomination of Piazzi Smyth. Is preparing a packet of observations for England; has JH anything to send?

Discusses barometer behavior during coastal gales and tornadoes. Will send JH a better specimen of oxide in granite fissure [illustration]. RW mistakenly assumed it was basalt. Regrets JH involved in RW's transaction with H. H. Gird.

Returns Mary Herschel's repaired concertina. Sends CW's recent paper on velocity of electricity [R.S.P.T. 124 (1834)]. Electrical experiments CW is planning. Appointed professor of experimental philosophy at King's College.

Is much concerned about the conflict between the races.

Has just come from Scotland on his way to the continent for two or three months. Pleased to hear JH's work is making good progress. Does he know that David Brewster made observations for two days of the year? Has sent him his paper on polarization. Has been occupied by the preparation of his paper on optics. Hopes to reduce his observations made on the continent in 1832. Would like T. C. Robinson, the instrument maker, to see JH's instructions.
