Has been requested by Lord Glenelg [Charles Grant] to propose candidates for teaching positions in the Government Free Schools at the Cape of Good Hope. Proposes a candidate. Asks for clarification concerning the salaries that will be offered.

Along with the Lord Advocate and other Scotch members of the House of Commons had an interview with [Thomas Spring-?] Rice concerning the enclosed memorial (Observatory of the University). Comments on their proposed plan for the work of the university.

Awaits decision on his fate as Lieutenant Governor at the Cape.

Invites JH to Kew Green to see Francis Bauer's plates etched by J. N. Niepce's photographic process. Perhaps L. J. M. Daguerre assumes more credit than is due. Heard Niepce visited London in 1826, but his paper was rejected by R.S.L. at W. H. Wollaston's urging.

Will compare the standards later. Has sent the theodolite to the Admiralty and received a letter of thanks. Thomas Maclear's paper on N. L. Lacaille's star positions will be read at the next meeting of the R.A.S.

Writing on behalf of George Phipps, Lord Normanby, thanks JH for his letter of 1839-2-23. Promises that Normanby will give it consideration.

Wishes to communicate to J. B. Biot, and so to Academie des sciences, JH's two 'beautiful' fixing methods, by hyposulfite and ferrocyanate.

Is grateful for the information on photography. Encloses president's card.

Enlarges upon his method of using salt as photographic fixer; then asks JH to explain the chemistry thereof. Has tried Louis Daguerre's fixing process without success.

Outraged over a [London] Times report of a massacre at Fort Natal in the Cape colony, which AS believes cannot be true; backs up his belief with a letter from a soldier at Fort Natal. Will take a business trip to Holland after which he 'will be ready for anything the Government may please.'

Making his last experiments on the morrow. Travels to and from Slough in the course of his experiments. Hopes JH will join him.

Regarding the four foot scale standard of Thomas Maclear. Will be pleased to see him on Thursday. R.A.S. has had a letter from the Treasury regarding a grant for Glasgow Observatory.

Thanks for his letter. His barometer is not intended as a mountain one. Though a slight error does appear now and then it is no worse than other barometers, excepting that at the R.S.L. Would like JH to communicate the drawing and description to the R.S.L.

Is pleased to hear that JH has taken steps to avoid the carelessness at the Post Office. Sends original of R. W. Fox's paper.

The belladonna JH gave him is throwing up vigorous leaves. Has a scheme for making it leaf and flower in the same season. Has some ingenious machines to show JH when he calls, which may be useful to JH.

Would like to assist James Stewart as JH asked, but CG resigned recently as Colonial Secretary and cannot help. [JH annotation: 'Called on Lord G. [Glenelg, i.e., Charles Grant] with Js St. [James Stewart] May 1/39.']

Has opened the box of dried specimens, but they are unsuitable for his purpose as they are not flat. Suggests that King's College or University College may be a more suitable home for them.

Read JH's letter to [Felix] Booth regarding magnetic observations in Europe. Describes WB's building and instruments for magnetic observations. Wants information about German observations.

Thanks JH for the interest JH has taken in him, but declines the offer to teach in the Government Free Schools at the Cape of Good Hope.
