The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Has found a few minor errors in the calculations checked so far [see GA's 1863-2-6]; comments on magnetic tracings JH received from GA.
Will take into account JH's suggestions [see JH's 1863-2-13] and see where this leads.
Is JH interested in seeing G. F. J. A. Auwers's catalogue of JH's and William Herschel's nebulae?
Did JH receive G. F. J. A. von Auwers's catalog of JH's and William Herschel's nebulae?
Might have saved JH some work if he had known what G. F. J. A. Auwers was doing [see GA's 1863-2-20]; has found some more errors in nebula calculations.
Sends copy of G. F. J. A. von Auwers's catalog of JH's and William Herschel's nebulae. Observatory has another copy. Notes odd lines seen in 'Refraction Spectra of 11 stars.'
Refraction spectra of six stars exhibit lines corresponding with 'Solar Line F.'
Expect some errors in calculations of positions for JH's catalogue of nebulae. Suggestions on format.
Does JH need the original calculation sheets to deal with the errors in the nebula catalogue [see GA's 1863-2-23]?
Explains how to detect errors in catalogued positions of stars. List of new nebulae in [G. F. J. A.] Auwers's catalogue.
Sends GA a list of errors found in the sheets for the nebula catalogue [see GA 1863-5-14].
Addresses each error JH discovered in reduction of JH's catalogue of nebulae [see JH's 1863-5-15].
Provides last list of errors and explains JH's role in detecting them [see GA's 1863-5-26]; is worried about the task of proofreading.
Is working on the correction of calculation errors [see JH's 1863-5-31]; GA and his assistants will deal with the problem of proofreading.
A letter of introduction asking GA to admit Major Robertson and his sisters to the observatory.
Responds to JH [see JH's 1863-6-2] about basic rules for admission to the observatory [for JH's future guidance]; GA discourages the visit of ladies 'who understand nothing and learn nothing.'
Comments on GA's activity in correcting the calculation errors [see GA's 1863-6-2].
Correcting work is gradually drawing to a close [see JH's 1863-6-4].
Has spent much time on figures and annotations for JH's nebula catalogue [see GA's 1863-6-5]; JH needs information from a paper in GA's hands.
Was surprised at the large vote in support of a parliamentary bill to abolish the British Standard of weights and measures; JH hopes bill will not pass.
