The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Book will be arranged according to JH's wishes. Underwoods are to be the publishers. Is pleased JH has found signs of greatness in William Spence's works. Hopes JH will show this in his biographical introduction.
Enjoyed 'good dancing account' of JH from Sophy [Sophia Baldwin?].
Asks JH to be trustee of SW's and her husband's will.
Asks about Cambridge friends, and that JW check on various items JH left there. Sends news, especially on 'mineralogizing' with [I. H.?] Jephson and Charles Babbage. Comments on recent deaths of J. A. Deluc, and of Princess Charlotte.
Regarding mathematical examples for their forthcoming book. Is taking up chemistry again. Comments on a paper dealing with functional equations by W. G. Horner.
Received the parcel containing GP's manuscript just as he was intending to go into the country. Delayed his departure to prepare it for the printer, but the latter is waiting for types. Comments on JH's suggestions. Observatory was discussed at the meeting of Caput but was put off till 3 Dec. further discussion. James Wood is exerting his influence against it.
Regarding W. G. Horner's paper. Printing of their book. Is preparing a paper to submit to the R.S.L. on a mathematical subject. Will be in town shortly and will visit his laboratory. Has received more sheets of [John?] Spence's essays.
Syndicate appointed to consider the erection of an observatory at Cambridge. Gives details of passage through the Senate. Was obliged for J. B. Biot's letter of introduction; found his talents and candor delightful. Had estimate from Edward Troughton for instruments for the Observatory. Printing of the examples began yesterday.
Will be a meeting of the Observatory Syndicate on Tuesday 16 Dec.; hopes that JH can come as his name has great weight.
