The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.

Thanks for congratulations, but JH is not yet appointed [Master of Mint]. Sorry to hear that JH inherits painful disputes. Plans to rely on WB's long experience [as superintendent of Die department].

Moneyers failed to fulfill conditions of apprenticeship for WB's son [F. R. Brande], yet they refuse to refund £1,000 apprenticeship fee that WB paid them five years ago. Asks advice from JH, who is member of committee that awarded compensation to WB's son.
Awards made by master [of Mint] to Moneyers should not interfere with Moneyers settling accounts among themselves.
Asks JH for introduction to C. E. Trevelyan for WB and Mr. Jenkins, representative for Mrs. Finch, to discuss their claims against Company of Moneyers regarding apprenticeship fee.
Instructions for transfer of dies and production of coins for Ionian [Islands] and Ceylon.
Gives instructions as to how to prepare a piece of copper for coining.
Asks WB to recommend candidates for supernumerary clerk to be appointed soon to Mint office. Has also asked W. H. Barton for recommendations.
Detained in travel; will return Monday. Recommends John Goldsmith as supplementary clerk. Advises against transferring Henry Finch or F. R. Brande from Coining to Melting departments.
Concern for waste of gold generated in cutting of coins. Fears government enquiry if waste continues. [JH annotation: Handed to Brande in person.]

James Wyon has proven to be competent engraver for two years.
Number of coin dies required by Sydney branch mint and lifetime of each die. WB would need six months to produce these.
Notes deficit in Coining Room between 23 and 28 Jan.. Following enquiries in December into similar shortages, JH now requires that WB submit written reports of daily accounts.
Send books from Cutting Room. JH wants to question W. H. Barton about deficits in Coining Room. [Two assistants] will be in on Monday.
Send written evaluation of Henry Finch, whose year of probation expires 14 Feb. Should Finch be hired permanently to Mint staff?
JH still waiting for report on balances used in coin production, in order to explain deficit of 23-28 Jan.
