The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.
Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood] wishes to see Moneyers Edward Enfield and Robert Rintoul in person on Saturday. Asks JH to be present also. P.S.: Adopted JH's suggestion to send Moneyers' memorial back to JH.
[Privy Council's] warrant to reorganize Mint and letter regarding compensation for Moneyers were sent to JH yesterday. Copy of Henry Bingley's letter of 30 Sept. 1850 came to CT with note that Bingley had withdrawn it. [JH annotation: Returned Bingley's letter to Bingley.]
Treasury commissioners appoint JH and Henry Rich to investigate Moneyers' claim to compensation for loss of earnings due to reform at Mint.
Forwards letter from Edward Enfield, who feels that Enfield's compensation as terminated Moneyer should not be diminished for declining offer of position in new Mint establishment.
Treasury commissioners will not make exception in case of Edward Enfield, who must accept position in reformed Mint or lose compensation for termination of Moneyers' contract.
Reports reforms made so far in Coining, Melting, and Assaying departments. Hired William Buckle, engineer from Birmingham, as assistant coiner. Robert Mushet will accept position of senior clerk and melter after G. F. G. Mathison's contract is terminated. Office of resident assayer, declined by Henry Bingley, was accepted by H. W. Field, who will assume duties after J. M. Beckwith, Master's assayer, retires. Position of junior clerk and assistant assayer, offered to Henry Bingley and declined, was accepted by Charles Sterry. Duties of nonresident assayers were accepted by W. A. Miller, Thomas Graham, and T. Johnson.
Consider CT's official letter of 16 Apr. suspended. Fee will probably be abolished and H. W. Field's salary increased to £500. Received today's letter from JH with enclosure by H. D. Harness regarding conduct of Moneyers. Will forward these to Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood].
Treasury commissioners approved JH's appointments and retirement of J. M. Beckwith [see JH's 1851-4-14]. Give legal notice of contract termination immediately to G. F. G. Mathison. Henry Bingley's claim for compensation will not be considered until JH's evaluation of it is completed.
Decision by Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood] regarding admissions to Coining rooms. Fee for assayer H. W. Field will now come from Mint accounts, not from Field personally.
Encloses two letters. JH reached agreement with Richard Franklyn and Edward Enfield regarding Master's right of access to moneyers' machinery in future.
Forwards Henry Bingley's appeal to Treasury for compensation for loss of Bingley's office as Queen's assay master. Notes previous offers that Bingley declined, including position as resident assayer in reorganized Mint. Points out that Bingley's son worked in Mint for past two years without pay in preparation for succeeding his father. Compliments Bingley's past work in raising Mint standards for purity of gold.
Tenders [for bids] should be let soon. Chancellor of Exchequer [Charles Wood] will see JH and H. D. Harness this afternoon.
Treasury commissioners rejected bids from Mr. Nutting, George Rennie, and firm of Maudslay, Sons, & Field for contracts to coin gold, silver, and copper coins for Mint. JH should develop a plan for conducting coinage in some government agency.
Encloses minutes of Treasury commissioners, approving compensation by Paymaster-general to company of Moneyers for loss of earnings due to reform at Mint.
Please return Treasury minutes regarding compensation for Moneyers so CT may alter it. JH may give copy of it to Moneyers. Returns Jasper Atkinson's application.
Returns JH's original schedule for Mint reform, with amendments.
Please send copy of R. L. Sheil's letter of 10 May 1849 regarding retirement of John Beckwith.
Submits JH's reformed organizational plan for Mint and new personnel assignments [see JH's 1851-7-26] for approval by Treasury commissioners.
Treasury commissioners have approved JH's new organizational plan and assignments for Mint.
Treasury commissioners admit merits of claims by Mint officers, whom JH supports, but does not agree to pay raises. Calculating salaries for more years than officers have actually served would set bad precedent for other public offices.
