The specimen of 'Tradescantia' from [Nicholas] Gwyn came from his hothouse, has a specimen for [William] Aiton [(1731-1793), director Kew Gardens 1759-1793]. Requests books: L'Héritier's "Sertum Anglicum", and Salisbury's "Flora Lapp.". Enjoyed second number of [James] Sowerby's ["English botany"]; recommends addition to the plates of the parts of fructification, avoiding repetition of the plants in "Flora Londinensis". Received seeds of 'Galeopsis villosa' last year, and seed of 'Scorzonera tingitana' from Mrs Hasell.

Sending plants for determination, to be returned, except the specimen of 'Zanonia', called at Kew 'Comelina zanonia'; observations. 'Tropaeolum peregrinum' not yet in flower, will send when perfect. Also sending cryptogamia and a 'Fucus' collected in Pembrokeshire last year. Requests that any new species in the specimens be sent to [Sir Joseph] Banks. Asks if Smith has vol 2 of Schreber's "Genera plantarum".

Alteration to the title of his "Hortus"; his printer "very dilatory, stupid, and troublesome"; agrees to alteration of genera in the cryptogamia, other queries, including whether to insert his plants from Botany Bay.

Account of plants collected from his excursion in Glamorganshire and Cornwall, including: 'Asplenium marinum', 'Pinguicula villosa', 'Erica vagans', 'Anthericum ossifragum', 'Triglochin palustre', 'Littorella lacustris', 'Sison inundatum', 'Bartsia viscosa', 'Cuscuta europea', and an 'Anselea'/'Osmunda' never discovered in England before.

Has several young plants in his "H. gippor." coming to fructification and a correspondent in Penzance, [Cornwall], to send him specimens. Has other cryptogamia specimens for Smith if he calls at Ipswich on return to London, including 'Corrigiola littoralis' for [James] Sowerby. 'Capparis frondosa' flowered with him.

Thanks for East India seeds. Asks Smith's opinion of the non-generic 'Glaucium', if there is a genus 'Codarium', if Smith ever met with 'Rumex vivparus' or 'Ornithogalum triquetrum'.

Sorry to hear of Smith's indifferent health in the "severe" winter. Botanical queries: asks if there are any species of 'Malaxia' other than 'M. paludosa'; what is "peat-moss"; is 'Brassica muralis' to remain or be reclassified a 'Sisymbrium'; what is the species of 'Geoffraea', now 'Hopea', Smith saw in his hothouse; which seeds of syngenes flowers to make trial of; are there plants called 'Aristolochia nigra' or 'A. hyeanalis'; what is new name for 'Osmunda crispa' and 'O. struthiopteris', is it now 'Davallia canariensis'. Found 'Hesperis inodosa' near Falmouth, [Cornwall].

Correction of his previous letter: wishes to know all species of both 'Malaxia paludosa' and 'M. exacum'.
