The Sir John Herschel Collection
The preparation of the print Calendar of the Correspondence of Sir John Herschel (Michael J. Crowe ed., David R. Dyck and James J. Kevin assoc. eds, Cambridge, England: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1998, viii + 828 pp) which was funded by the National Science Foundation, took ten years. It was accomplished by a team of seventeen professors, visiting scholars, graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and staff working at the University of Notre Dame.
The first online version of Calendar was created in 2009 by Dr Marvin Bolt and Steven Lucy, working at the Webster Institute of the Adler Planetarium, and it is that data that has now been reformatted for incorporation into Ɛpsilon.
Further information about Herschel, his correspondence, and the editorial method is available online here: http://historydb.adlerplanetarium.org/herschel/?p=intro
No texts of Herschel’s letters are currently available through Ɛpsilon.

Has sent JH's letter to Cleveland Abbe with a request to send JH the information. Has not seen the sun through his new telescope yet.
Notice of £50 grant from B.A.A.S. to JH and G. A. Erman to support H. J. R. Petersen in recomputing Gaussian constant for 1839. [JH annotation: £40 remitted 13 Mar. 1871; £10 remaining.]
Asks a whole series of silly riddles, and JH complains of not having heard from AD.
Writes to clarify the actions of the B.A.A.S. [see JH's 1870-5-24].
Corrects date on publication by G. A. Erman.
Requests some rewording of B.A.A.S. resolution [see JH's 1870-9-27].
Having been placed jointly in charge with G. A. Erman of a B.A.A.S. grant expenditure to support H. J. R. Petersen's recomputation of Gaussian constant for 1829, JH asks for corrections in the statement of the actions funded.
Reports on status of John Robinson's eye following cataract surgery.
Apologizes for not writing often. Has been ill. 'Moderate' use of 'Coca de Peru' [cocaine] helps. Is working on a 'General Catalogue of double stars reduced to 1830.0.' Acknowledges works received.
Explains error in B.A.A.S. report on grant for G. A. Erman. Will notify George Griffith.
Sorry to learn of error in B.A.A.S. resolution regarding computation of Gaussian constant. JH's proposal, explained by G. G. Stokes, was passed by Committee of Recommendations. Errors occurred later, in transcription. Will resubmit JH's proposal to Council.
Has calculated the ecliptic of Thucydides. Comments on this and the reading given by E. W. Hartwig. Regarding the 7 eclipses of the sun during the past 30 years. G. Bishop's assistant (W. Plummer) is investigating the orbit of the great comet of 1861. Nautical Almanac for 1874 delayed due to extra work on the transit of Venus.
Corrects a misunderstanding about the date to which magnetic observations are to be reduced.
Would like to become a member of the Board of Directors of the Midland Railway for which there is a vacancy. Would welcome a testimonial from JH.
Gives JG a journal reference.
Regarding the publication of the Cincinnati catalogue of double stars. Is sending the Annual Report of the Cincinnati Observatory.
Many thanks for his reference. Will check it.
Recounts various reports of phenomena in the sky related to the 'great Moscow phenomenon' of 'mock Suns and inverted Arches.'
Did not receive JH's letters as he was away from the University. Rejoices at his news of the B.A.A.S. grant.
